NGC. Vehicle situation, what would you do???
« on: December 23, 2021, 03:44:30 PM »
I have a 2014 ram 1500 pick up truck that needs the rear end replaced.  It will take six months to obtain the correct 3.92 ratio rear end for it (it’s a long story as to why that is). Which one of the following choices would you choose to get a vehicle.  Yes I outright own the 2014 ram and owe nothing on it.

Option 1.  Trade in Ram at a dealership for a new truck (Toyota or Nissan probably)

Option 2.   Buy a used vehicle to drive and fix the ram when the rearend is available in six months and then own two trucks.

Option 3.  Go without a cage vehicle for the six month period and just ride my motorcycle during that period, and then fix the ram after 6 months.

What would you do?  Thanks and Merry Christmas

Option 2   Buy a old beater till you get the truck back and sell the beater for what you paid for it. Used car lots are full of them in the back row.

I like #4-- Buy a used rear drive. Want me to look down here? My son in law has a diesel truck shop.

I have some mechanics looking for used rear ends up here.  The 3.92 isn’t real common and is pricey.  That’s the reason for the six month wait.  If the used ones are in good shape and available they want an arm and a leg for them!  Il probably just ride my cycles until it’s fixed.

Have you considered rebuilding the one you have? Or a good mechanic do it for you?  Jeg's or the like might have a kit or just the gear set depending on what you need.

Otherwise, buy a beater if you are in a state where they are easily registered.

Rent a truck when you really need to haul something and ride the bike and car the rest of the time.

Is the failed rear end a ring gear or pinion failure? If so maybe parts would be easier to find and have a mechanic to rebuild if you can’t.
Or, buy a cheap used car that you can get your money back or most of it, when you can get your truck fixed. I think either way you are going to have to get the truck fixed because selling it broke ain’t a good idea financially.

Ugh no great options. What about buying a good used truck, then selling the Dodge after you fix it?

Buy a used rear end with a different ratio? May need speedometer jiggery then though.

I was wondering since he didn't say 2x4 or 4x4.

I changed my 2000 GMC from a 3.42 to 4.10 and ended up having to buy a tuner because the ABS system couldn't handle the change.  $350 I didn't plan on spending.  The new gears were only $150.

Yep I 2nd the 4th option. Just what I was thinking. Swap it out.  Hope you get a good one though. Ha. I did a Delta 88 Convert way back and got a bad one, had to pull it and get another. Just bad luck.

I’m leaning toward #2 (buying a used vehicle and having two vehicles when the ram is fixed). I will do option 3 (just ride my cycles) until I can find a used vehicle that I like.  Dang vehicles can be a headache at times!

OP, get on a website dedicated to Dodge trucks, especially one for modified trucks...The often younger guys have lots of useful info...
I assume you or the mechanics are searching aftermarket gear manufacturers and vendors catering to the off road crowd.
Do you know what type rear axle is in the truck? There are several depending year and so on..

Unless the cost to repair or replace the rear end was ridiculously expensive, I would fix it and keep going with the known-issues, paid-for vehicle.  Otherwise, you start the unknown process all over again with the next potential money pit.  We just had the r&p done in my wife's 4Runner.

Buying new is all about the $$$ and is still no guarantee that there won't be issues to address.  Buying used- typically the best time of year to get a good price is mid-Jan until tax rebates start coming in.  Prices are supposed to be coming down later in 22 as the used car market normalizes somewhat.  That alone would make me wary of buying a used car right now just to flip it later.  Might not be able to cover what you spend.

So the extra money spent on the used vehicle purchase, taxes, maybe tires & basic mechanic tune-up, etc could have been no different than the cost of r&r the rear end in your current truck...

Dang vehicles can be a headache at times!

Which is why many now lease.  Especially luxury vehicles that are known not to be very reliable.

Others trade while there is still market value in the vehicle, and before the known issues show up.

An article I read yesterday said that the used vehicle market should trend towards normal pricing in 2022, but I'm sure it will never get back to 2020 prices.

Yes, what is the nature or the failure? Bearings are easily replaced. Only skill involved is setting up the pinion and ring gear engagement. I've had good luck finding gear sets here: https://www.randysworldwide.com/ring-and-pinion?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvv6dtOP89AIV4oFbCh1DrQu_EAAYASAAEgK2xfD_BwE

The mechanics said main bearing is going out in the rear end and whole rear end has to be replaced on this model truck.  It is a 2014 ram truck 3.92 rear end 4x4.  I’m leaning toward either buying something used or just sticking with my motorcycles until the ram can be fixed.  I’m not interested in leasing because I was informed that that is the biggest rip off out there and I put on too many miles.  25k per year

Bob, are you married to that rear end ratio?  I'd look around for any ratio rear drive that would fit to get the truck up and running rather that have it set.  Letting it set for 6 months?  You'll end up with more problems with it by the time the rear drive is repaired.  Get it running then sell it or trade it.  Used trucks, regardless of mileage, are an easy sell, as long as they are in running condition.

Mechanics said if I change the rear end ratio away from a 3.92 I have to replace front end drive components too to match which makes it doubly expensive.

My Dodge abusers boys claim the 3.92 is the standard ratio ,should be more than a few out there ....There was a recall due to bearing failures...The larger pinion race may spin and junk up the bore, peening and loctite, replace all bearings..And they suggest if your mechanic is not a dedicated 4x4 expert, find another shop..
