Tire Mileage
« on: June 28, 2022, 06:22:22 PM »
Time to change the tires on my trusty Norge. Last time I did this was 5 years ago.
I looked at the miles and I am pretty happy with the wear.
Rear = 15,259 miles
Front = 14,259 miles
I just finished a 1200 mile road trip, I wanted the new tires on before the trip but they did not come in.
The tires are Dunlop Road Smart 3.

would you mind telling me what part of the country you live in?  in the cincinnati area, i barely got 6,000 on any of my sport touring bikes, BMWs mostly about the same weight as the norge.  i get about 9,000 on my v85 and am extatic about that.

Michelin Road 4 or 5 give me very good service. Not uncommon to get 10k. Just got back from a trip: Seattle-Arkansas-Seattle on the Norge. Have an upcoming trip Seattle-Flint MI-Seattle. Will probably mount new tires for peace of mind, tho I am not sure it is necessary.

I’m in the 6-7 k Mi. On a rear tire . I don’t run them till the cord shows , as the wear bar gets close to even w/main tread off they go ! Being quite allergic to plaster of paris  & skidding down the road .
A few years ago I was riding home from a rally in the rain , at one point I thought the clutch was beginning to slip , nope rear was hydroplaning & tire didn’t look that bad
As the add says “your mileage may vary” .

I live in the greater Seattle area. I watch my tires for the wear bars. The front tires were wearing thin, I didn't see it till it was too late. When I took them off they still had tread showing.
So I looked in my records. The last set of tires which were the same Dunlops:
13,200 ON the Rear
12,800 on the front
I DO ride like an old man....

I just put a fresh set on my 1200RT BMW and curious to see what I get for mileage.

As for tires on my 1100 Breva I have gotten nowhere close to what you have gotten.  Michlen 3's and 4's in the 4-5,000 range and the same for Skinko's as well. On another note my EV will only get in the mid 30MPG while others claim 50!

The material texture and quality of the roads in your area must have a big influence as well as your riding style.  All I can say is good on you.

Is there a chance you're using a British mile, which is shorter than a U.S.? Otherwise, I'm jealous.

Crap, I was thinking of a gallon. Dumb ignorant American, lol.

I only ride my bikes on Sunday, and always downhill.

I usually get 10,000 miles on a rear tire.

I'm also in the 5-6000 mile club with my '14 Norge.  The original Angels surprised me with some glitter showing at 5000 and I'm glad I spotted it as it was not expected.  Pilots seem to be a bit better for life but I don't sense a difference in general behavior or feeling.  I ride somewhat conservatively as I no longer have an immortal attitude....

Are the roads wet during a good portion of your miles??
May be a partial explanation? Trying to fathom getting half those miles out of my tires.  :boozing:

I think the Dunlops must have a harder compound than other tires.
I remember reading a comparison test among sport touring tires and the Dunlops scored high in long life.
I pretty much ride on dry days. There are not too many really hot days in my area.

Riding style, road temps/surface and weight are all tire killers. If Scott rides like an old man, is in cloudy Seattle with low road temps and doesn't load the bike up then it's feasible he gets higher mileage. Either that or his bike's ODO is WAY off...

I do average 47MPG US on long trips. This one I got 48.
The original tires did not last well, and the first replacements were not great.
Since I discovered Dunlop Roadsmart 3's the tires have worn much better.

5-6K on rears, don't matter which bike or which tyre, came to the conclusion a while ago, buy Shinko tyres two at a time and run them until a change is required.  DonG

So , If a person ask the rear tire to do "all the PUSHING and half the STOPPING , then said person can't expect the REAR tire to last as long as one who belongs to the person who : Ask the REAR to do ALL the pushing and Ask the FRONT tire to ALL the STOPING.. :grin:

Just purely logical , ain't nothing hard about it !  :rolleyes:

I got about 4.5K-miles on the Sports Demon rear that came on my V7II , and would put a Michelin Commander II on it if the right size was to be had.   The Shinko 712 went 12000 miles for 1/2 the $$ of a Sports Demon and felt just as good !  :smiley:
