Hmm ok.....so if he puts wings on it and runs a prop off the final drive and flies across Lago de Como does that qualify for the first motorcycle to fly across?

By these rules, yes.
The article says that he "defies the laws of physics". If it didn't have skis on it........
It's a motor boat. Still takes a steady nerve! It would sink like a stone if he lost power. And any excuse to cruise around Como is a good one.

funny...should have read..."displays the laws of physics" hydrodynamic lift ...actually aerodynamic lift as this example does not occur "in a fluid"
here we go down the physics road....lol .......Duck :Beating_A_Dead_Hors e_by_liviu

Yes, but that doesn't read as well for the hoi-polloi as "defies". Like the evergreen nonsense about "scientists say bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly" and stuff like that. People like to think that they've got the "inside track" on something new and different. It's the same thing that causes "oil threads" to metastasize and grow ...

Ha
So do you think he actually did the math...or the trial and error method...or a combination of the two.

As long as it's "I think" and not "I know" .... :thumb: I think it came from snowmobiles, where people would hit an unfrozen creek at speed (maybe by accident the first time) and realize that if you kept your speed up, the sled would keep on going on top of the water, like a flat pebble skipping along, and wouldn't sink until you slowed down.
Then someone said "I'll bet I can do that on a bike", and rode into a shallow lake and the bike would ride on the water for a LITTLE while and then sink, so they added some skis until they had the right size, modified the knobbies with hill-climb paddles, and off they went.
Probably all empirical and experimentation, and dredging up a few bikes at first. I've seen similar things happen!

Ariel did that two-up across the English Channel 90 years ago!
(OK maybe some differences in execution, but at least the Ariel version would float if the engine quit!)

Not a new innovation. Robbie Maddison did it three years ago and made a pretty good film:

Great visuals..
Would not want to have been the bloke who contaminated Lake Como with fuel ond oil in the event of a failure midway across.
But it worked and he didn't, so all good I guess.. :thumb:

What if he had a flat out in the middle?

they say Jesus walked on water... He's no Jesus..
I did that once (with a broken foot, see crutches) but the water was real hard..
