1975 Moto Morini 3 1/2 Sport ?
« on: July 17, 2019, 09:12:20 PM »
This Moto Morini  is on Ebay listed as a 1975 Sport. Asking a heck of a lot of money.

I love the looks of the drum brake 1975 Sport but there are details that just leave me questioning the authenticy of this bike, small details such as the air box missing and replaced with K & N filters, that's a common thing owners did in the day, rearets have been added and the front engine brackets have been chromed.
Left hand switch gear was that used on the later Moto Morini 500W as well as some Ducati Bevel Twins.

Now the bigger questionable items the front hub/ brake is not a stock item, it's some form of aftermarket brake and the dash is off a newer model as well.

Probably started off as a 3 1/2, likely a later model and dressed up to look like the iconic 75 model.

Maybe the seller bought it this way and believes its legit, or …...

The 230mm Grimeca brake was originally single leading on each side as on the  Benelli Tornado wheras the one in the photo is also a  230 mm Grimeca, but with twin leading pull. Originally Tornados were set up like that , but feedback from Cosmopolitan Motors made BenellI change over to the  single pull type. Not much diff. and just as heavy, possibly more abrupt or just as wooden  as the Tornado's if not set up correctly.  In any case, it does look good as many Tritons and other specials have sported them over the years.

Cannot provide anything definitive about originality other than that is the proper later version 2LS panel.  If it is original to the bike, that is the casting I would expect.

The earlier Grimeca 230mm four shoe brakes have a milled/open scoop with screen held on by screws that can be easily removed vs the integral cast grill bars on the scoop of later panels.  That change seemed to be post 1970, but all I base that upon are old magazine and publicity images.  The hub did not appear to change between the early 2LS as described, later 2LS and the Benelli brake that used the same 230mm hub (as in interchangeable) with a SLS panels with lots of ribbing but no scoop.

I've had all here at the same time and did several side by side comparisons.    Also here & compared at the same time were a 180mm SLS 4 shoe Grimeca (1974 Ducati Mark 3 450) little 115mm SLS 4 shoe Grimeca (supposedly sold over the counter), a few Suzuki GT750 four shoes (which have an open scoop like the early Grimeca 230, covered by a round hole screen that's underneath a faux louverd chrome cover) big awesome Laverda 240 mm 2LS brakes and my V7 Sport 4 shoe (the only one left here...)

looks like a bitza to me ,
wrong front and rear brakes for a sport ,
 wrong kickstart, wrong headlamp hangers
counters, handlebar switches, basically the whole front end is from a later bike
but still a gorgeous bike....

the price tag is a bit optimistic, even for a brand new original bike....
