There are way more black helmets for sale. I feel fortunate to find a red and white helmet that I think is going to work out.
Today I stopped into a shop to try on a jacket because I cant for the life of me find mine..Pretty sure I have a First Gear Kilamanjaro (sp?) in wine. Well nothing at the store. (Only saw 2 helmets in the store my size. Much more difficult shopping when all you have is online). Look online and ALL of the options in my size are black. WHY! Black is hot..And I think less visibility. Seems crazy that this is the top color out there.

ANYTHING "black" in Arizona is not really a very good idea....

For helmets. I really don't like black or white ones. Silver works, but that color has limited models. If you have a helmet you like, go online to one of the places like J & P Cycle or Cycle Gear. See if they list your brand and model, then look at the sizing chart. A small may be a medium in another brand. Also they usually have the shape of the helmet shown as well.
Jackets you really need to try on or know the brand and model that fits you best. Some may be perfect around the body, too short arms and vise versa. Look at reviews and even contact the mfgr to see if they can tell you the sizes.

I don't remember what forum I was on when I helmet sales rep pointed out that helmets (hard shells with foam liners) are insulating like coolers.
As such shell color often doesn't have much an affect on wearer head temperature.
This guy took multiple helmets, put them in the sun for a while, and took temperature measurements on the inside of the liners.
Prior to that I often bought white helmets assuming they would be cooler. But now I have a variety of colors, including black, and I've not noticed any real difference.
Though I agree brighter still equals more visible.

I want a snazzy H&B open faced helmet in sparking metal-flake red, like I had in high school! It was da BOMB!

Black is a good starting point for a custom paintjob.
I used to paint match my helmets to the bike before I learned about the 5 year rule. Now I keep my helmets inside when not using and buy a new one when I buy a new bike.
-
I've seen several studies with the conclusion that white helmets are most visible-so I wear while. Plus, my Guzzi decals look great on them!
-
At least you're not stuck with helmets that have crapy graphics because your size is XXS. :thewife:

^ That's probably the best graphic'd (is that a word ?) helmet I've seen in quite some time :) . Peter

Oh,.too many years in a hard hat where no painting or stickers were allowed.for safety reasons..I didn't think I could comfortably cover a motorcycle helmet.

That's a good data point on the helmets Kev. I can let the black helmet issue go then but the jacket issue pisses me off. Why are they all black!! I'm only looking at textile. I can understand black leathers.

I like a white helmet. Mostly because everyone else has a black one!

I'm with ya. I've never had a black textile jacket for that reason. Currently gray and high vis yellow on the good one.
-
I prefer not wearing black OR grey, Blends in with pavement.
-
I have never worn anything but a white helmet in 40 years of riding. Pretty sure if I got a non-white helmet now I’d get killed within six months

It's gotten to be like a ritual for me. If it's good enough for Gene........

With closeout items black and white are usually the last to go. I wanted to replace my HJC 3/4 helmet and that model was being closed out. The only one I was able to find in my size was black, my first.

You are absolutely right, the reason most all LE agencies issue white helmets to their motor officers.
-
That’s also a good point. More than once people have told me they thought I was a cop on my bike. Only thing I can figure is the V7 is white and black, and my helmet is white.
I’m not complaining.
-
My first helmet was silver. My first bike was black and grey. My first jacket was grey and black. Cars pulled out in front of me on a weekly basis. I was very close to giving up riding in my first summer. Then I got a white helmet and a hi-vis jacket and all that changed.
I still wear white helmets but now wear a black Aerostich two-piece. I don't think jacket color makes much difference but the white helmet sure does.
Local shop doesn't carry any white helmets because, as they told me, "we can't sell 'em".
-
I normally ride with a white Bilt modular but for around town in the summer I have an HJC three quarter in black. Decided to "make it more visible " this winter.

I don’t care what I look like. I can’t see me. White is the safest so that’s what I wear.

If I can't find my jacket this week I'm going to look into maybe Olympia. the Dakar jacket comes in pretty light gray. I think black is just too hot. It's physics. It's like the motorcycle gear companies don't ride motorcycles.

Anyone familiar with Sedici jackets?

What brands are you looking at?
Klim and Stich both come in multiple colors.
As I thought a lot of other brands do, though I don't pay as much attention, but I thought there were color options from REVit,, Tour Master, Icon, Alpinestars, Dainese, etc.
Yeah some of them have all black options and many of them have black panels along with colors, but lots are brighter too

Ya'll telling me WHITE is more visible than my ugly loud Shoei??? Oh no! Thats the only reason I settled on this color!

-
I saw a guy in Az a couple of months ago with a florescent orange helmut. 10 time the visibility of anything I have ever seen.
If you bring that Minnesota black "Stitch" to Georgia it will be up for sale on the first 80 degree day.
-
Black is stylish for many people and there is only so much space in a store.
The Hurt Report showed white helmets to be under-represented in crash statistics. How you interpret that data is up to you. I choose to believe better riders choose white helmets and they are more aware of their surroundings.

Unfortunately I am constrained by jacket size and colors other than black aren't available in all sizes.

You too big or too small? Or looking at closeouts?!?
Jenn wore her Ducati mesh yesterday and I mentioned this thread to her when I realized it was black. I asked if she's ever too hot in it. The answer was no. But we can't say if that's cause she tends to avoid super hot days or if the physics of the outer layer heating up in the sun doesn't seem to matter when air is flowing through it.
I'm still with you and would prefer other than black, but maybe it's not a death sentence if you can't get anything else.

I need as large as possible. My experience in GA says that black does get hot

if you ride in winter you appreciate black ,
any other color will soon be close to black if you ride all year round.
we have loads of rain and salty roads during the winter, unless you want to wash your motorcycle gear every week during the four month winter period, it makes no sense to buy a light colored jacket.
just depends on local climate and riding habits.
the helmet is another matter , I never had a black helmet, but i wouldnt hesitate to buy one if it was the best choice.
if on a motorcycle you rely on being visible for your safety, you are taking a huge risk.
my riding instructor taught me to consider yourself invisible when riding a bike....

Well I spoke too soon. There must be a Great American Jacket Shortage because I can't even find a black jacket. Been looking at FirstGear Kilimanjaro or Kathmandu or Tourmaster Transition and they are sold out or backordered into late June or July everywhere I go. I knew we had a chip shortage but textile jackets too? Amazing.
-AJ
-
I've been happy with my IXS jacket I got on Amazon for $69. Well made,
Lots of Color options, 3 layers, full armor. Very comparable
To the Kili.
Sizing is wacko. I normally wear large, but 2xl is a bit tight
And 3xl is perfect for extra layers.

Have you considered the big hitters? Klim (via Revzilla) or Stich (direct)?!?
Pricey, but worth every penny. I only got a solid decade and a half out of my Stich.... but I expect at least that from my new(last year) Klim.
Bet they're in stock too.
-
According to Aerostitch's sizing page, they don't even make my size. Klim lists a 4X and a 5X in their sizing chart but have zero stock on their website or any of the online retailers. I've tried about a dozen different sites, a variety of brands including those 2. Like I said, it's as if there is a great shortage out there.

Hey thanks for that. That IXS jacket I don't think with work for me but I never thought to check Amazon for a jacket. Lo and behold they have a Tourmaster Transitions jacket in the Gray/Black/Hi Viz yellow and one size larger than what I tried on in the store. So fingers crossed, hopefully it fits. If not I got Amazon's return policy working for me. Things might be looking up!

If you’re hard to fit, as I am (6’6”) it’s quite difficult to find anything but black in most riding gear. I looked at practically every brand available for a Tall xL/xLL in anything but black and simply could not source one. A handful of mfg claim to make them but no body had stock.
-
Stitch will custom make one for you.
Nope. I reached out to them. They will tailor a jacket of the rack for you.
But if you don't fit in something off the rack, they won't custom build a jacket.

Winner winner chicken dinner!
I can't believe all the places I looked I end up having to order from Amazon . I never would have guessed.
So for closure, I think this Tourmaster Transitions is going to work.
Have to remove both inner liners.
A little more snug than my old Kilimanjaro and I think not as long, but doable.
I thought it would zip to my Tourmaster pants but there's no zipper at the bottom of the jacket.
Not necessary though.
Still mostly black dammit. I just don't get the manufacturing logic on that.

All of my helmets have been white, for the last 70+ years.
my last purchase, 2 years ago was a Klim. Modular, not too heavy, very quick changing, drop-down glare reducer screen, quick release.
BEWARE: Klim helmet shells contract when they are in temps of ~75*F. and above.
BEWARE II: klim helmets also contract when temps are in the ~30*F and colder.
Weird for certain. Klim has ignored my several emails and hard copy pleas for an acknowledgement.
I wear an extra large. Without changing the temp around me there have been times when I've not been strong enough to pull the straps open to get my head out. I'd enjoy knowing the shell materials that behave thus - and the dumb ass/asses that let it happen. R3~
-
Wearing a hi-viz yellow vest over my black jacket does the job for me.

Well little fella, we've had this discussion before! I feel your pain at 6'7" and now 300.
I have my 'stitch Darien suit for my touring days.
Locally on Marketplace, I actually found a Harley leather jacket that apparently is a tall size as it fits my arms and body well. The body length extend below the belt by a couple inches in the seated position. I think I paid $150 4+ years ago for and "official" Harley jacket made in Indonesia.
I do need a new helmet, and even my L or XL sizes are limited in availability.
Oh the 1st world problems we have!
-
^^^^^ Hiya Gary.. how you doing, pal? It's been a while.

What's the deal with black?
It matters. :violent1: :violent1:
