Tell me about the 1000 Strada...
« on: June 04, 2019, 02:41:10 PM »
There isn't much AT ALL in an internet search, and I realize now why I have been confused about the name; many searches refer to the SP and Strada interchangeably, as if they are different names for the same model.

I searched here and deduced that "...the Strada is a naked SPIII...", so I guess I can think of it as an SPIII with no fairing.

Which makes me wonder what the seating position and handlebars are like, behind a windblast with no LM or SP-style fairing. Looks kinda upright, but so does any early Tonti, I guess. I always thought the attraction of an SP or LM was the renowned fairing.

I suppose, like most early Tontis, a change of bars/footpeg position/fairing can make all the difference? Was the engine a small-valve, mid, or big-valve? What size were the carbs?

Don't know much about it either, but I'd say it's closer to a Mille GT and LeMans 4/5 than the SP3. The SP3 has the long swingarm, 250mm shaft I believe, whereas the others are medium shafts at 180mm.

The SP is short for Spada from what understand, which means sword, Strada, means road.

It's a naked SP3. Mid valve engine  :thumb: with 36mm pumpers. There's a lot to like.

Yes,  a lot to like.  Stiff(ish) forks, disks on "buttons", F08 Brembo calipers, still the linked brake system, decent sized  carbs and valve-sizes, a 'kinda lousy seat that does not favour the passenger (there is not a lot of space... and the person can tend to slide forward... also a lousy grab rail).

Same old 5 speed....  long-lived but not slick.

Mille GT type instruments.

Would do well with a windshield, perhaps.... and with a stock 18" front wheel, will not suffer too much re stability at speed with same (edited:  "... will not suffer too much re stability at speed with said windshield"...).

Incidentally (related to your comment re tubeless tires) the alloy rims for the SP II, the 850T5, and i suspect - the Lario (if it runs tubes) - can be converted from requiring tubes to being able to run tubeless. I have the tire stems (from Moto International) to make that switch though I have not done so yet.

There are two nice examples on Maine Craigslist. The Strada seems reasonable with low miles. Both from the same seller. He also is listing an SP II.
I agree that the seating is awful especially for two up and the wind noise off the stock shield of the SP III is BAD. But, The mid valve motor with 36's is one of the best all-round. It will run all day at 80 and return 45 - 50 mpg. I actually got 70 mpg one trip on the BRPway. Logged over 80K virtually trouble free miles on our III. A Strada with an SP 1 or 2 fairing makes a nice package.
