2011/12 California
« on: June 06, 2019, 04:27:32 AM »
A bike as come up for sale that I am interested in. It is listed as a 2012 Moto Guzzi California 90th edition. I would have thought 2011 should be the 90th special edition but it has the correct paint scheme so I will give the seller the benefit of the doubt as he claims he purchased it new and it may have been 2012.

Before I look at it I am interested if there were any problem areas or recalls on this model. I now some had problems with tappets but I think that is earlier.

It looks the part in the photo with the colour matched saddle bags and such but close up will reveal what sort of life it has had.

It has 75000 kilometers on the clock and has towed a trailer for some of that time as he mentions he will include the tow bar with it for the right price. I won't be towing a trailer but am unsure if this is likely to cause excessive wear.

I would prefer to go in with my eyes open as I have only had small block Guzzi's. I would be disappointing to announce my new purchase here only to have 5 people ask if I had check for a list of known to some faults.

Thanks

Steve

I just did a Google search, it seems to be right around then the bike changed from the EV platform with 2 Valves to the 4 Valve 1400.
The 4 Valve definitely had some teething problems but the 2 Valve engines were well sorted out and bullet proof IMHO

How can you go wrong unless it's well around the clock?

I think it is pretty much a California Vintage model with a different paint scheme.
This bike would have the twin plug heads, engine.
As far as I know this model as well as the Cal Vins did not have any serious issues.
My Cal Vin that I sold about a year ago to a friend has about 80K miles and is still going strong.

You can see it in my slide show:

The 90th Anniversary Limited Edition (orange/white, brown saddle) was built/sold from 2012 to 2014 (presented for the first time at the end of 2011).
The CaVins have the Breva 1100 engine (dual spark) with differnet valve cover, oil pan and alternator.
The engine is running very lean a new map is a must (pinging).
