I’ve been a mopar guy since I was 16 years old. However Ford motor company definitely has my attention with three of their pickups, the Maverick, new Ranger and the old workhorse F150.
Personally if the Ranger gets close to the same highway MPG ratings, I’d probably go there first and if the F150 V6 Ecotec gets anywhere close to the bigger motor Ranger, then I’d probably go with the  1/2 ton Ford.
I guess what I’m saying is for my use it would not be practical to go with a small pickup over a larger one with a 12k + towing capacity, for only a 5MPG difference. Especially when the 1500 Ford is capable of 25 MPG highway miles numbers.

eeeehhhhhhhhh.

If I were buying tomorrow I'd be looking at Mopar or GM for a NA motor. I don't want a turbo on my truck if I don't have to have it.

I mean don't get me wrong I've owned turbos and supercharged motors. Jenn's Defender motor is pretty damn impressive and all that. But for my simple needs, I'll take NA if I can get it.

Plus, in the past decade all of the NA motors I've owned/driven could meet or beat EPA numbers, while all the forced induction motors STRUGGLED to match EPA ratings (and this was borne out by consumer reports and the like, the EPA ratings even the revised methods have conditions that favor the forced induction motors, but the real world is still the real world).

So no Eco-Boost motors for me if I can avoid them thanks.

That said, when I was in Denver last month I rented a 2.0 turbo Wrangler Rubicon which was pretty damn impressive. I guess if I lived at altitude I wouldn't hesitate. But I don't.

I believe they're counting on short memories of the consumer as the Explorer SportTrac was not a success they had hoped. We shall see......

You guys are thinking about this all wrong, hung up on towing capacity and 4WD and what not. The Maverick only LOOKS like a truck, but it's not a truck. It's a Ford Escape with an open bed, or basically a car with a truck-like bed. It's for suburbanites who hardly ever need a truck, don't tow a boat, but need to put 10 bags of mulch in the back for their weekend flower bed project. Or take their kids to hockey practice and want to throw two rank smelling hockey bags in the back, outside. Or bring home a new grill or lawnmower as a gift for father's day.

It's not a truck.

-AJ

BINGO!! And they will sell like hotcakes. I know three guys who have already been to the local dealership and plan on buying one. There is a market for these "trucks" and I would buy one if/when I ever decide to own four wheels again. I had an original Tacoma and my son still has a pre-steroidal Ranger. These smaller trucks were perfect for my needs and I'm sure many others out there will agree.

I'd guess there might some local delivery, small appliance and landscape use for them.  Especially if you can get 40 mpg around town, I'd imagine it would attractive deal.  Perhaps cheaper than a EV with a bump in fuel economy/emissions?

Heck, Fiat imports a Dodge FWD commercial van that Winnebago makes into an RV.  Weird, since MOPAR invented the minivan.

I really like this truck....thinking of selling my 2006 Ridgeline and going with this Maverick.....my Ridgeline has been a great truck but the new ones are crazy expensive....I have no need for the “BIG” trucks....they are getting as big as semi’s....Ford is gonna sell a ton of these Maverick’s.

crap, I had no idea.  TWO Broncos?    No wonder no one can figure out all this hype.  Perhaps they should've called the Sport, Maverick?  And unibody truck something else?

Range Rover does something similar with their Discovery and Discovery Sport.  I think Ford did a great job with the new Escape based Bronco Sport and F150 Based Bronco.

I fondly remember the days of the little pickups from Mitsubishi, Toyota, etc, and always wanted a Rabbit Pickup or Subaru Brat. The new trend is going to be more of the smaller unibody pickups. Several models are launching the next few years.

I'll stick with my Tundra TRD PRO. It's paid for and will likely outlast my driving abilities.

I am on my 5th F 150.  Last 3 were standard cab short wheelbase, 6 ft bed.  I own a 2020 XL model now. I use it as a truck.  Center seat removed and only 2 seats. Over 200 hp, will carry a load, pull a trailer and has a real frame that makes it safe.  It has all the features that the high end models without chrome, leather or carpet.  It is fast/quick and handles great.  I would take a swb over a Ranger any day.  Bigger cab and real man size seats.  And cheaper.  By in the fall when model year clearance is going on.

I traded in my 10 y.o. truck with a blown motor and wrote a check for $8,500 after buy downs, rebate, and a plan sharing programs.  Truck I bought set on dealer lot for almost a year.

There are two Ford truck plants near my home Louisville  KY.   Many Thousands of trucks are sitting in several storage lots waiting for computer chips.  When these trucks come on to the market, the 2022 model years will be rolling out. Expect deep discounts on the 2021 models.

There is 1,000 sitting 2 miles from my home.

Exactly my thoughts!
I would definitely consider it to replace my 02 Nissan Frontier XE; I never tow anything; I just use the bed for the occasional hauling of garden supplies, big screen TV,  and have even rescued my son's 1976 Convert once without any issues.
I just don't understand the reason for crew cab/4-door configuration-only as offered on the new Maverick. For a family vehicle, I want only (and have) a 4-door sedan.

So, it is more like the Ford Explorer Sport Track than the old Ranger design.

Really though, Ill go out on a limb and say that what? 90% of all pickups sold are used for those reasons? No its not going to tow a big camper, or boat. The good news is that they sell other trucks that do. A lot of people want a small truck for as you said.. trip to a garden center, or trips to the dump. They might not be hailing 2000lbs of stone, but a handfull of bags of mulch sure thing. You cant argue that trucks have gotten REAL big over the years. Even the small trucks are huge. Heck a new ranger is about the size of my 74 Dodge Powerwagon. Remember how many small trucks were around in the 70's, and 80's? The small imports, and the slightly bigger US models? There is still a need for them, as there was then. Small light duty trucks, that are easy to drive, park, big enough bed to hold a normal ammount of dirty cargo.. Good MPG, at a price that doesnt break the bank..  There is still a need, and I think a want for that kind of truck. Its not for everyone, or every need, but either were the old Datson, Toyota, Mazda trucks from the past..  I guess the numbers will tell the tale after it hits the market.

Yes.

That is probably what the majority of truck owners need. They are not going to haul a load of gravel, or tow a camper. They just needs to haul a few bags of mulch a couple times a year, so 363 days out of the year that are driving more vehicle than they need. Me, I go to Home Depot or Lowes and rent a truck for $30 once a year.

Plus it may help Ford meet some CAFE average, so they can upsize the motors in the larger trucks. Like the PT Cruiser did for years ago. Most people don't know the the PT Cruiser was classified as a truck. If the PT Cruiser can be a truck, this is certainly a truck.

I would find this truck useful for a number of reasons. If I need anything bigger, I'll hit up a friend or simply rent one for a day. Something that is not a gas hog is a good thing! Since I'm used to getting 36mpg with my car, I am not willing to take a big hit in that department for something I would not need everyday.

As for safety, since many unibody vehicles carry a 5 star crash safety rating, I have to take exception on a full frame vehicle being any safer than the more predominate vehicles on the road.

How any man who cleans their own bathroom, doesnt pee sitting down-- baffles me. I know this clearly places me in the minority. But again, I haven't pissed on my pants, shirttail, bathroom floor, shoe, or hand in 20+ years because of it. I get out all my macho standing to pee quota out in the yard or in public restrooms

When my old 1980 F250 was getting a little long in the tooth and my wife was pushing me to buy a new truck I went to the local Ford dealer to look at new F250's. My wife, being uber curious, asked the salesman if she could look at 250 to see what they look like. I rolled my eyes and went along. Crap.......when I stood next to that monster I new immediately that there was no reason for me to own anything that size. My old F250 was basically the same body as a F150 just with heavy duty everything.

So I went back to the drawing board and started looking a 150's. I told the salesman I did not want the Ecoboost V6 because I have had a 300 Straight 6 in the 250 and I wanted a V8. He shook his head and said "No you don't. Come on, lets take a ride". I decided to humor him and took the keys and went for a short ride. Holy crap......I was impressed immediately. Great acceleration. That motor was really nice. Now, mind you, my 1980 F250 had a 300CI straight six with a 5 speed straight drive and could not get out of it's own way if it needed to, so this was a world of difference. I was sold.

I have owned this 2013 F150 for 8 years and almost 90K miles and I have no regrets. It gets an average 19MPG between highway and local driving. I can get as much a 22MPG on long trips. The most I have hauled with it was my dad's Ford Escort. I hauled it from Northern Illinois to Columbia, SC and it didn't skip a beat using the Tow-Haul switch on the gear selector, it was flawless.

I hear all that. I'm sure it's a great truck.

But FOR ME, I'll still take a smaller truck with a NA motor. The 300 hp Pentastar 3.6 is enough for me.

That said the wife's supercharged 400 hp Defender is fun at times.

That was my same impression, my older son bought a used 2018 F150 off a Ford dealership last year, I thought he should look for a V8, salesman took us out on the V6 Eco Boost, was I impressed! he bought the big 4 door 4X4 and he loves it, its a beautiful riding truck, all the bells and whistles but its just too big for my needs + I get to borrow his when I need something that can pull a big trailer.

Those turbo charged motors have some real snap, they make a V6 really jump. My 4 door sedan has a twin turbo V8 with an 8 speed auto and that thing will snap your head back on WOT.
