Road Food ?
« on: October 02, 2022, 09:48:34 AM »
I always take some lunchmeat and bread and drinks along.  Freeze a bottle of water to keep everything chilled - then drink it later in the day.  Maybe a can of SPAM.  A couple of hotdogs in heavy aluminum foil, stuffed down between the cylinders makes for a warm meal at some roadside park.

Water and a protein bar. I just do not seem to get hungry when on the road. But make up for it when I get home. ;)

I carry water, Cliff bars and some jerky in case I get hangry but usually look for an interesting roadside stop to take a meal break. On the way home from the PA rally it was some good BBQ at Skeeter's at Shamokin Dam overlooking the Susquehanna river.

bottle of water and a granola bar.  Sometimes I'll make a quesadilla (cheese and tortilla) and/or take an apple with me.  I don't need much food while I'm driving.   A cup of coffee at a restaurant is nice, though, if it is a long (5 hour or so) ride.

Unfortunately far too much of roadside food in the UK comprises of fried or poor quality food as there's a tendency to drive prices down to the cost of quality

There are options, most often associated with cafes/restaurants attached to farm shops

Google maps is my friend in this case for most rides to make sure some good munchies are planned for somewhere along the route :thumb:

In Australia we have a number of different instant noodle meals in there own container, just add boiling water. There are even some with meat in a sachet you add. As I have the ability to boil water on the road for coffee I normally take one of these. The advantage is that I can stop where there are no crowds and make a simple filling lunch.

I ask a local if I wanted to take them out to eat the best or favorite (whatever), where would we go?  Not just the most expensive, but the thing I would never find on my own. Doing this makes it easier to find the good stuff and many people like to be asked such a thing.

I like a restaurant or fast food breakfast, the a shady spot for a light lunch like cheese and sausage, then a Mexican restaurant with beer atthe end of the ride.

nalgene of water, an apple, sweet and salty trail mix....

That's about it, and I don't usually eat even all of that. I don't tend to get hungry on my rides, but I rarely go over 3-5hrs in a day. Most of my rides are just long loops out into the mountains, so if there are a lot of stores and restaurants around, I have picked a bad route. Occasionally I will take one beer or a flask of wine if I'm planning to stop mid-ride to dip my feet in the river for an hour or something

If I am truly touring (like headed to a rally) I just eat a good breakfast and figure out dinner once I get there (or close). I have no interest in ultra-mileage rides or iron butt stuff, so have only been in a situation where I needed to stop and eat *more than once* just a couple times- ever. Honestly if I had 8+ hours in the saddle ahead of me, I wouldn't want to stop much anyway- thats too long to be on the bike in a single shot. Just grab something at a gas station and get on to my destination.

I am a sucker for a coffee shop tho, if I see a cool-looking indy shop (never starbucks), I will stop for sure and put down a nice double latte or cafe au lait

I carry sweets or hippy cookies (granola bars)  plus glucose tabs in case my diabetes meds kick in too strong. I will often stop and buy a yahoo chocolate milk or a gatorade. I don't go far enough off the beaten path to need to carry much.

I’ve been impressed with increasing quality of simple cold sandwiches at gas stations….

Choc milk and a chicken salad sandwich I’m good to go…

for about an hour then I need to be home for a nap…

You made me go look at the ingredients !

Mine say 7% of the daily recommended salt, per container.

We eat pretty good on trips. Breakfast is eggs and sausage. We break the eggs into a screw on lid container when transporting. First three dinners are normally brought from home, steaks and burger. Pick up a can of beans or corn and something sweat during the day. Lunch is from a local restaurant.
