Somehow I thought the various versions of Cali III were just different paint schemes. Was there a substantial difference between models?
Sam Stone, came home, to his wife and family, after serving in the conflict overseas.
Cal III was a 1000 (949). Available from 1987-1993. Then, they bumped the displacement. That made it the Cal 1100 (1064) from 1994-1997. Available EFI made it the Cal 1100i.1998 saw the big facelift and brought us the EV. Then followed with 99 Bassa / 00 Jackal/ 01 Special / 02 Stone / 02 Special Sport / 03 Aluminum / 03 EV Touring / 04 Titanium / 07 Vintage.
You forgot: Stone Touring / Stone Metal / Classic / Black Eagle
Was it a "Stone Metal" or just "Metal"? (honestly asking).
2002 and 2003 availability. As I recall, it was first referred to as "Stone Chrome", then became "Stone Metal".And, oddly enough, there was a Stone Metal availablie with glossy black fuel tank.
hmm, I don't remember that.DIDN'T the Metal have dual disc brakes? Was it the mini-boards or did it have pegs?

From the several posts responding to my question it looks as though the various models were essentially light changes of physical features and paint/trim around the essential Cal III. Is that fairly close? I have been glad the basic machine seems to soldier on, just changing clothes with the seasons. The very first few EVs had a red circle around the "EV". Was that the 1998? For some reason I had thought it was a couple of years earlier than that. Mine is a '99. As much as I disliked the Tonti style when it came out in 1975, when I got on that one I was willing to overlook the appearance because it was such a delight to ride. After several years I still like the EV's lines and get along with it pretty well but my attention wanders when a Convert clatters past.
When I was resigned to buying a Jackal, before buying I had decided to refer to it as a Chacal as in "Ici Chacal" in part admittedly to chafe the "Gootsie" crowd.Later with the Calvin in addition to verbally dropping the Vintage, I was happy to have it removed with the re-paint. Now it's just a California by me.I think I'd be plowing the "Stone" under as well - a little too OCC for me.
One can only wonder what the hell they were thinking using the same name again on a totally different bike.
Gotta love John Prine.
One of my favorites was the Pumpkin Orange tank Stone, anyone have a pic of it?
I believe that was flint orange, limestone white, slate, and I forget the ugly one. Good thing nobody told marketing it looked like a pumpkin or we'd have the california vegetable. How's your breva tomato doing?
