The Wallabies had a great fall last Saturday and their coach has fallen on his sword to make way for a replacement, who has a month to lick the boys in to shape for a game against the World's Best. We can only hope.

The nice salesgirl at the bike shop gave me a pitying "where have YOU been for the last century?" sort of look, and sold me some cleated shoes and pedals where you step down onto the pedal and a trap locks the shoe to the pedal.   You twist your foot to the side and pull it out to release your foot for when you stop.

Well .... you remember "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In"?    The skit where the guy rides around on the tricycle, then stops and just falls over?   Even though I had practiced some in the apartment, when I went out on the road and pulled up to the first traffic light, I did exactly that.   Came to a stop, could NOT release my shoe from the pedal, and just went right on over onto the road.   Even LAYING there, I couldn't get my feet off the pedals.

I bought a Specialized road bike a few summers ago, my first with clips. Salesman told me they work like ski bindings, kick out from the side. Seemed OK a few times in the store and I headed out for the 10-mile ride home.

I hadn't even gotten out of the parking lot when I came to the first stop and realized I didn't have a foot clear. The bike toppled over and my head bounced off the raised curb. Even through the helmet it rang my bell and it was a few seconds before I could pick myself up. Without a helmet, I'd have been headed to the hospital or morgue.

ATGATT is a good rule for bicycles as well as motorbikes.

I've come to the conclusion that nothing matters, but everything matters, but don't see a way to walk the walk.  Any recommendations?

I'm conflicted on the ATGATT on the bicycle.   On a motorcycle, you're just sitting there sort of, and if you're loaded down with gear, it's no big deal.   On a bicycle, you're moving around a lot, having to pull extra weight around, and (if you're here where I am) it's 100 degrees and heat's coming off the asphalt and you need to be able to sweat.

I know that the curbs and concrete are no softer or less abrasive when you're on a pushbike at 20 MPH as opposed to a motorbike at 70 MPH.    But I don't want to get too knotted up with gear and not enjoy the ride ... I'll have to think about it ....

I'm envious and jealous of the food porn shown in the last few posts. Also the riding you all are getting to do. You guys all suck.... but I hope you keep posting. Does a body good to see people actually out and enjoying the scooters at home.
Ride safe and have a blast....

I had a wonderful ride back from Comox on Vancouver Island back home to Pender Island. 3 hours on a fast scenic highway with little traffic and fantastic weather!

Bike ran very well.  ;D

Some other lucky motorcycle riders returning home on the ferry.

Fresh warm ocean breezes. Great place to live.

Sucked, we lost a fellow Guzzisti, CocoaFrank.  Though I never met him, it still hurts to lose a fellow goose lover.  He was young also, only 64 I believe.

Dusty,

Well I am having a good time in NYC despite the heat. At the MET they had a special punk culture display and I scored a really cool black with skull riding t-shirt.  Got to see my favorite nephew last evening and his girlfriend (wow) at a meatball place.  The food was fantastic.  Supposedly today there is a cool front and rain so it is all good.  The company I work for announced Thursday they are selling our business unit for $3.8 billion so here comes career chaos, yet again.  So, I may open my filters up and go job hunting looking for an organization with better leadership, focus and communication. Hell I may say to hell with Houston and try for the hill country?  So it goes in the oil business.  I am missing my weekend riding yet I will catch up when getting home.  How people ride in Manhattan baffles me--slow, nasty and not my idea of riding a bike.  My brother is still struggling with mental health issues and we hope for significant progress before the fall semester starts so he can begin supporting himself again.  Hmmm, on the hunt for some fab NYC pizza today!  Coffee and bagel time now.  Thanks for asking.

Went to the Buell & Italian Bike Festival at East Kirkby for the 25 Anniversary of the museum. http://www.lincsaviation.co.uk/

They ran the Lanc so I was about 30 feet in front of 4 Rolls Royce Merlin's giving it the beans . Why would anyone want an inline 4 when you can have 4 V12s in a line  ;-T

So far this year we have had six feet of rain, my bike was filthy and I was going stir crazy with being cooped up indoors. Yesterday, when a break in the weather presented, I decided to forgo my usual Saturday pursuits and get out in the sun to wash the bike. Now I feel better ;D

Awesome ride today, about 440 miles. Early morning start from Evergreen, CO, to Laramie, WY, then west across the Medicine Bow mountains via Snowy Range Road to Riverside, WY, then high speed (100-120 mph) to Walden, CO. There's nothing after Riverside but miles and miles of miles and miles. Then, south to Winter Park, CO, via CO 125 Willow Creek Pass. I love that road -- perfect for bonding with your bike. Zero traffic, smooth road surface, continental divide, fresh tires, continuously linked curves. Lunch stop in Winter Park, then 50 miles to home via Berthoud Pass.

Sorry 'bout that! I feel your pain, though. Took a new job in Omaha a few years ago but quit after 16 months to return here. I missed the curves!

You probably wouldn't recognize Grand Lake today. There has been a LOT of beetle kill in the past few years and the trees look awful. It's a massive forest fire just waiting to happen.

Japenses beetle, or emarald ash borer?  I miss hearing the Elk bellow in the misty/foggy mornings too.  :'(

I believe a few different species of beetle are wreaking havoc on the western forests, depending on elevation and species of tree, but I hear a lot of discussion about the Ips beetle around here. Insatiable little MF.

Olddog, I'm so sorry to hear your news. Never an easy time.

Lannis, maybe I should plead the 5th. 440-mile days and elevated velocities are not in the V7's vocab. I bought that bike for Sunday rides, not Saturday rides...

Back in northeastern Ontario again, looking for bears and washed out roads.  So far no success, just smooth riding, perfect (cool) weather and no bugs. An easy 400 miles on the Eldo today.  Now beer and chips for supper in front of the motel tv. Life is good.
