California 1100 ev 80th anniversary
« on: February 17, 2017, 06:55:09 AM »
I have just brought a  California 1100 EV 80th anniversary with 9000 miles on the clock ,Are there any known faults that i should look out for. I have a problem with the oil light when the bike gets wet the oil light starts to glow is this a common problem. I Used to own a V50 some years ago and put on  yam switches all was well with the bike until giving it a good ride on the motorway and the exhaust vavle melted
drop t through the piston trashing the engine

Welcome, Nice Bike!!  The oil pressure sender is a bit dodgy, but glowing w/damp sounds like a corroded connection either in dash wiring or on the sender. Most likely on the sender. It's in front of LH cyl on top of block next to phase sensor.  Not much else goes wrong w/Cali EV's non hydro's.

Sometime around when the 80th was produced, there were some problems with cracks in the triple trees--yours may or may not have been affected. Can't remember any other issues.

Watch for pressure building up in the tanks.. There are guys that trim the gas cap seal to stop it.. That did not seem to be a good idea to me, so I just removed all the bull stuff that caused it. Perfect now.. The only issue I had was a oil light out, and the Neutral light connection in the dash was going south. Took the bulb out of that, and put it in my oil light spot.. I really never trust a Neutral light on any bike, so not missed at all..  I had many new bikes, but my 2002 stone is a great/simple/reliable bike to own.. Very good motorcycle for sure..

If they were still using Siemens relays you might carry a few spares. Get the good ones from dpguzzi.com

+1 on the DPGuzzi relays.  All the electrical issues on my '99 1100 EV went away after replacing the Siemans with the DPGuzzi's.

The oil light coming on in the wet is a common problem
Try cleaning the switch insulator, wet dirt conducts electricity better than just water, you should find it at the front of the engine, you could also wipe it with some WD40

The 80th anniversary bikes were a maroon color with matching maroon leather seat and bags. They put the 80th anniversary stickers on all the tanks till they ran out, haha. My 2002 Stone has one on it.

if your shifter or brake pedal is all wobbly, put a brass bushing in there instead of the factory nylon one.

The 80th anniversary bikes were a maroon color with matching maroon leather seat and bags.

This must be the model that was designed by Poltrona Frau, the Italian furniture maker.

As I recall the model years are different between different markets but the crinkle paint peeling was the only thing I can remember as an issue for that year.

Great bike!

I had one great bike and looks great.
No problems other then that stupid solenoid fuel cock.
This wires are going to break just order a manual fuel shut off from Harper's.
I did have my Bassa shut down on me first day into a 9 day trip.
I laid the bike on the Left side pulled the solenoid and cut he tip of with vise grips and went on my merry way,
since then every Cali type bike i replaced them not worth the headache

I dont know if they are still available anywhere, but a Moto Guzzi accessary king/queen seat. The seat is leather(I think, I do have one, haha) with 3/4" gel pad under the cover.
