Out of gas (V9)
« on: June 28, 2023, 04:21:12 AM »
Yesterday, I ran out of gas when I expected to have about 2 liters of fuel and 30 miles in range to go. Since the reserve light always come on early, after about 9 liters of fuel has been used, I expected the light to come on prematurely and that there were 6 liters left.

Not so. No more than 4 liters, just as the manual says. So where are the two liters my tank is missing? After stalling, bone dry, the tank took 13 liters. I fill until fuel sits just above the holes in the filler neck.

Anybody else tested how much fuel goes on soon after the reserve light is lit? Or I could ask; what is the most you have managed to get into your Roamer or Bobber fuel tank?

IIRC I've had 125miles out of my Roamer and decided that once the light came  on I had 25 safe miles and 50 if it ranit down to the vapours!
Does depend on your riding style though I guess 🤔

Do you fill the tank with the bike on its side stand or vertically level?

I fill it on the sidestand and stop when the fuel level is above the air bleed holes by 1/4 in or so, and the highest point of the nozzle/filler hole is level with the fuel. Since the filler hole is just to the right of absolute center, in my mind I should have a full tank if I kept the bike level. But next time I am going to raise the bike into a perfectly vertical position and see if the levels drop enough to allow more fuel in.

125 miles until the light comes on? I get from 130 to 150 miles until the light is lit, and managed another 60 miles until bone dry.

Best bet is to go by miles. Reset trip meter at every refill, and count the miles. Most of my Guzzi fuel lights (other than the Norge/Breva 1200 Sport) come on when there are 1.5-2 gallons (US) in the tank. When I first get the bike I generally fill when the light comes on, mark how many miles and gallons filled, then based on tank capacity -1 gallon calculate my ideal fill time.

I currently have 240 miles on the tank on the 1200 Sport and the light isn't on yet (and the gas gauge is worthless). I am going on a group ride Friday and will fill up before, am interested to see how much it takes.

BLUF I try to fill when there is 1 gallon left in the tank.

Look at Mr. Fancy here, with his functional trip meter ...
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

LOL @normzone

I always go by the trip meter, since it also gives me a warning how how high the consumption has been until the reserve light goes on. My mistake was that I expected the tank to hold 15 liters, which again would require a larger than claimed reserve amount. However, the reserve is correct and the amount above it is too small. Or I do not know how to get a fuel tank full.

FWIW, my son's MT-07 also lack fuel capacity compared to claimed volume. When it was run dry - just stumbled into the gas station, missing and making faint noises - all we could get into the tank was 12.7 liters, 1.3 liters short of claimed. That was on the center stand and fuel half an inch above the filler hole. BTW, it ran (almost) bone dry for the same reason; there should have been more fuel left theoretically.

Ah, to be young again, and have functional speedometer, odometer, trip meter, and tachometer. I remember those days.

I also fondly remember the tank on my Eldorado, which held 5.9 gallons, until I epoxy coated the inside during The Great Rust War, whereas it held less. That bike also got 40 to 50 MPG.

The tank on "Josie (the Bassa Rat)" holds 4 gallons and some change, and with no functional instruments, I approximate tracking my mileage using road signs, Google maps, and filling the tank at the slightest excuse. Since the bike only gets twenty-few MPG, caution is the better part of valor.

Around town I can go between 113-127 miles before the light comes on.   Running 80 plus on the slab, or into a good head wind over 75, I have had it come on at 91 miles, so conditions seem to have a big effect.  I have gone over 40 miles with the light on and not run out of gas under normal conditions.   The farthest I have gone on one tank was around 160 miles and the way I figured it, it should go 170 plus before running empty, but I haven't proven that yet!

Sitting at 75 mph against the wind will drop mileage considerable, probably below 50 mpg. This is my consumption overview until now:

The furtest I rode between fill-ups was 345 km, but in reality it was 336, since I rode 9 km to the gas station after the splash and dash when I rode the tank dry. or 208 miles. The longest I went without running dry is also exactly 336 km (208 mi), but consumption was a little lower (better) that time. From now on, I will limit my riding to 50 miles / 80 km at the most from the reserve light comes on.

Resisting the urge to link to the Firefly episode "Out Of Gas" - no need to annoy the mods and if you've seen it, you know what I mean.
