Title: Fitting a 6 speed V11 gearbox to a Tonti...?
Post by: radguzzi on April 17, 2021, 05:05:28 PM
dxhall is selling a bunch of V11 parts including two (2) 6 speed trannies.

My '04 EV makes a whine in top gear which I believe to be that pesky plastic bearing cage but I do not know for certain so I seldom use 5th.

I wondered if the gearbox dimensions are the same.  Can I bolt up a speed to the EV engine and will that box fit in the Tonti frame...?

I would have this box rebuilt but I do not know who is doing that work now...

Any input by those in the know...?

Thanks,
Rob

It does bolt up, clutch works and behind that nothing lines up, no holes for support bolts. Even the CARC 6 sp works till you get to mounts & swingarm. Die grinder & welder needed.
I kept asking the guys at the dealer meeting at Elgin, IL in 99. They kept avoiding the question then said yes and just buy a new bike!

It will bolt up to the motor however the output shaft will be 30mm further out to the left the 6 speed is also much shorter than the five, if you are happy to go down the custom swingarm or perhaps a V11 swing arm you may be able to do it. I would also look into what it does to the gearing I understand the 6 speed runs a different primary ratio to the five the the final drive ratio is matched to it.

You could do it there wouldn't be much EV left after you did, it will be cheaper to rebuild your five speed the EV might not have enough output to really take avantage of the extra overdirve that the six speed has.

It is the fifth gear teeth. The surfaces of the teeth get pitted and they start to scream loudly. If you use Redline Shockproof lube, it will quiet it down a bit. I use fifth a lot and have had to replace mine twice in 130,000 miles. The plastic caged bearing should be replaced if you get near them, but that is not the noise.

Can the shift drum and gears be exchanged between gear boxes.

I thought about using a Quota gear set in a 5 speed.
