Gearbox casing - Cracked
« on: July 06, 2019, 12:06:45 AM »
Hi All,

As  per the thread title, I have a crack in my gearbox casing on my V11 Sport, good news its at the top of the casing, bad news possibly its around one of the frame mounting points. My mechanic reckons its weldable , obviously not cheap as it's engine and gearbox out to fix, just wanted to check that this will be a longterm/permanent fix not going to be case that it's always weak at this point and will go again later?

Updated the post with the mocked up of library pic showing area of crack.

Cheers

Andy

Pics would be helpful.  If not, how about a graphic diagram with the damaged area notated.

This is a well known issue on the V11 Lemans forum. It affects (mostly) the early V11 Sports. There are a couple of stress risers that can be blended out before it happens, and a brace that should have been installed from the factory. Yes, it can be repaired. I'll look for the thread and be back.
Edit:
Here was the first..

There is also a current thread on a Daytona.
All spiney people really should be on the V11 Lemans forum.. it is a wealth of knowledge.

Do not spend time and money to try to repair (weld) it.

I have a new house part for you. This part is matt black instead of the wrinckle paint that was used on Rosso Mandello.

My part is belonging to a 2003 or later version. No cracks are reported on these versions.

Part number 01200290

Let me know if this is of interest.

cheers for the replies, I am on V11Lemans as well but it's not as active these days seemingly so thought I would try here and thanks for the link, I'll have a thorough read.

Thanks for the offer on the new housing, but shipping to NZ would be expensive.
Cheers Andy

Paging LowRyter to tell us about Don's fix...
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

BTDT, like Chuck says.  Read the piece on V11 Lemans.

In my case I was able to get the case welded and it's held for a couple of years.  Sure, a replacement case would be great.

The important fix is getting the transmission brace the factory left off.  The guy the fixed mine, Don Moomow (MOTIV cycle works) made a run of braces (and sells Guzzis).  Don took the housing to a powder coater and left in the oven for a few days before he welded it.

Btw, Don fixed Darren's (new) Griso with a (warranty) clutch master cylinder.

Last autumn I sent another case to New Zealand.  It is possible. Maybe you know him?

It is all about price and shipping and what the customer can accept to pay.

Thanks all and the thread on V11lemans was interesting, given me some things to ponder, but sounds like I need to enquire about the brace whatever I do.

Rolf could you give me an idea of price for the gearbox casing and I will check with the mechanic as to what swapping the internals would cost.

Cheers
