NGC: Favorite Offbeat Musicians
« on: July 11, 2019, 09:59:38 PM »
Guzzi owners are an offbeat, intelligent and discerning group who knows what they like whether it’s mainstream popular or not.

So ... what musicians do you guys like who are not mainstream popular?  Don’t give me your Bob Seger, Johnny Cash, Elton John, Taylor Swift.  I’m looking for offbeat.  Acquired taste.   Under-rated.

I’ll start.

I’m a big fan of American folk singer Slaid Cleaves.  Out of Austin, previously from Maine.

And Iris Dement.    You either like her vocals or not.

Eliminate the negative;
Latch on to the affirmative;

Primus is definitely off the wall.  Wikipedia explains, "has been categorized as alternative rock, alternative metal, experimental rock, funk rock, funk metal, progressive rock, and "thrash-funk".  I also like subsequent work by prominent member Les Claypool including some well interpreted Pink Floyd covers.

Dave Brubeck is off beat literally and one of my favorites when in the right mood.

I have been enjoying a Kinks channel on Pandora lately.  I hadn't realized how vast their library is.  They are well written lyrically and have novel rock sound IMO.

Well, definitely bookmarking this thread for further research - last night my local college station kksm turned me on to John Grant - see GFM on Youtube. I called the DJs and they were speculating he influenced Father John Misty - I believe it. Or they're cousins ...

The Rev and Zappa are great, Buckethead is technically proficient but a bit of a head case.

I wrestled a bear once? The name reminds me of some kids I met who called themselves Uncle Tom's Cabin - I'll have to check the bear out.

Lots of homework to do - thanks much fellows.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Interesting, many of the folks named so far are acts I've been following for some time.  I'll add to the list:

Lindsay Sterling (love her - nice lady and lots of fun to watch)
Striking Matches (met them at NAMM in January and immediately fell in love with their music)
Ali Handal (turns our she is married to a magician friend - who knew?)
Steve Stevens (I first heard him on Sounds of Wood and Steel (track 10 if you're interested) - didn't know he was/is Billy Idol's lead guitarist)
Altan
Tommy Emmanual
Perpetuum Jazzile
Robery Kyle (Jazz sax player - local to LA)
Robert Randolph (steel guitar like you've never heard before)
Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps
Ana Popovic (what do you mean, you've never heard of her?)
Jann C. Castor (street musician in Santa Monica and composer of movie scores)
Old and In The Way
Marley's Ghost
Bela Fleck
The Wiyos
The Traveling Wilburys (I'll throw this one in here as there actually are some folks that don't know George Harrison pulled together some friends and formed a Super Group - Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty round out the group)
Theloonious Monk
Ballyrag
The Brother Project - Also just known as Brother (Rock and Roll bagpipes - yes pipes as in two guys playing them.  Oh, and didgeridoo)
Incendio (local group and friends)
Buddy Emmons (especially with Ray Pennington and the Swingshift Band)

OK, I'll stop here.

really almost all my music is under the radar...

Two big ones..  Trixie Whitley. First time I heard her I was blown away.. next is strangely her dad Chris Whitley...  Who I found after listening to Trixie.. Sadly he passed in 05. he was amazing, and really did it all...  IMHO One of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times, and probably my biggest influence for my own music.

As for more...  There is so many..  So much new fresh talent in the roots category these days....  Molly Tuttle is a MONSTER on guitar..  Larken Poe are amazing..  Chris Thile, Sarah Jarosz Aoife O'Donovan ..  So many really....

Do any of you ever get accused of being weird for listening to "other" musicians and riding a Guzzi?  Sometimes I think my wife would be more at ease if I rode a Harley and listened to classic rock radio. She doesn't "get" Townes Van Zandt or Leon Redbone or John Prine , if I listened to Primus it would go bad. Wife likes John Denver and it makes me want to erp. Before getting married I dated women that liked "other" music but they were not good wife material. One of my buddies said my music rated high on his" weird shit-o-meter".

Clutch
The Bakerton Group
Primus

The Bakerton Group is comprised of the same members as Clutch but is a more groove/jazz. The Bakerton Group has opened for Clutch.

Good to see Clutch and their incarnations mentioned.   Great band.
