Where are all the girls?
« on: February 21, 2018, 01:09:36 AM »
Surely there has to be more than only GG.
I lived vicariously through her pre-purchase and consequent voyage of discovery and read with interest, of the bubbling excitement with the sheer joy, that a new bike brings.
Sometimes trepidation, sometimes excitement, sometimes pride, and I loved the bit where she said she took the kids to school and pushed them out of the car then home and off on the V7.
It's too damn easy to become engrossed in farkling and arguing about all sorts of trivialities, and forget just how much bloody fun this motor bicycling caper is.
Would be good to hear about the issues in riding purely from a woman's point of view.
Thought a good name for the articles would be the GG spot... (but then I thought...no)
So where's all this leading?
Here !
There has to be more women on Guzzies than the ratio of 1 in (God knows how many).
Who was that sheila who had the little jigger and went arse up once and dropped away ?
Was it HardAspie ?
Maybe they are out there but just don't feel the need to tell everyone...
Now THERE'S a skill I could use..!

Because forums are generally riddled with misogynists, sexists and perverts. Maybe not this one in particular, but some of the stuff posted on Facebook bike groups is downright cringeworthy.

BTW, I find your reference to a woman as a "sheila" offensive.

Why?
Urban dictionary has this interpretation...

A great and loving person someone that you can call a sister. The most amazing cook ,generous heart, caring and loving. She is Funny and loves to Dance even if it is to her own music. Life is full of fun and funny stories with lots of laughter when you are with her. She pushes her self out of her comfort zone to accomplish the tasks that's placed before her with a job well done. When you are sad or feeling ill she is the first one to respond to your side.

If your a Sheila set your goals high, Because this is what Sheila's do.

It is Cool to be a Sheila ...Bright, Smart and Beautiful in side and out. Most of all In tune with the Spirit of God!
Sheila: Spiritual,Good Humored,loving and caring.

My wife rides.  Avoids forums like the plague.  Says it's a bunch of old guys debating different shades of blue!
Sometimes I think she's correct.

My girlfriend rides, and even has her own Guzzi now, but she keeps telling me that bulletin boards like this one are only for people above the age of 60.

That's funny!
I hope she is lucky enough to get to 60 or beyond.

There is a great deal of collective wisdom that comes with life's experiences, and younger people should maybe try and benefit from that.

We don't bite!

:-)

I do get where she's coming from. There's boards like this for everything under the sun, each a separate little community usually contingent upon continued member funding. She prefers a site like Reddit, where there's a single login and anyone can create a "sub-reddit" or community for anything they wish.

I get it, sorta like face book..no?

How novel.

Nah, FB is total garbage. Reddit really is more like a massive discussion board, that is broken down into categories. There is in fact a Moto Guzzi sub-reddit.

We are a subculture in a subculture in a subculture . Despite the MoCo's efforts to bring more women into the culture because they wanna sell more bikes , female riders will always be another subculture inside of the already small group .

That , and quite frankly , why would a woman want to bother with us old geezers ?

Hmmmm, I likes me a sweet juicy little 30 year old.

Just kidding, I aint no pedophile, my daughter's 43. But though we  are mostly old farts  here there is some young blood  I believe, but even if there weren't I'd say you young girls would get the respect you deserve and in the meantime you'll benefit from help in keeping your wheels going nicely.
If in need at any time I suggest you contact Peter Roper who is happily married and has a daughter round your age who he adores but most importantly he can solve almost any Guzzi problem known to Man Woman or rubber chicken.
Seriously girls if you are riding a Guzzi this is the place to come to for help and good advice. Don't worry about some of the old toads around the edges, just ask what you need to know and listen to all the help. This is a pretty good place for that, though as you say most here are probably too old to have a really good time with. Maybe Chuck in Indianna still has a bit of spark. I think he's running a Dyna 111.

And this advice is free, because none of US ever used it and so it's still in new condition!

If I were a girl, I'm not sure I'd enjoy reading this list regularly.   We're either unconsciously misogynist sometimes (just from old habit), or we're aware of it and trying too hard NOT to be, to the point of being paternal and over-the-top about it.

I AM glad for the women we have here that can see through all that and not let it bother them, and contribute ideas from a different point of view than ours .... makes us better people.

Reddit? reddit is largely a cesspit. That place is toxic, and so full of misinformation and bullshit, it beggars the mind. It brings out the worst in people. There's some value to it, but the effort to value ratio is terrible.

Yes Ha!, true.

People these days are more and more separated by a keyboard is seems...pity.

I look forward to the few rallys that I can attend. I like talking to the ladies, a different perspective is welcome.

:-)

We had what , 15 ladies at CV last year ? All incredibly lovely and intelligent , wish we had twice that many , their moderating influence on our nonsense is a good thing

I think our discussions are too serious and technical.

Try to start more topics about the colour of the bikes, bike grooming product and tips, riding apparels, food, and desserts.

It all depends on what sub-reddit you're reading. If you're reading a sub-reddit that belongs to a redpill misogynistic group you're going to have a much different experience than reading a sub-reddit that belongs to the group about LGBTQ literature.

As gearhead web forums go, this one is pretty civilized. I'm on a Buell forum and half the content is gun nut talk and conspiracy theories and a Mack forum that's thrown me off more times than I remember for disagreeing with their political agenda. After that, this forum and the other good ones like the airheads list are a breath of fresh air.

I'm with Lannis. I like having diverse participants on this forum. I've tried other discussion groups and social media, but they didn't work for me. This site is loaded with Guzzi gurus, but also folks with lots of other expert contributions that have enriched my life.

As for being over 60; hey...I'm still 14 on the inside.

It's hard to strike a balance.   I get muzzled plenty at work because of PC work rules. I hate walking on eggshells. Then again, I hate vulgarity and contention for its own sake. Some of the smartest people I've met were on Illuminati, but the place devolved into a hate filled scheissenhole. Having more ladies on here? As long as the content remained about the same, why not? If it caused even more censorship, then meh.  Finding moto-lassies who would enjoy the cyber company of we curmudgenly bastages as we are, priceless!
