Bolzano...nice!  That's where my sister was born.  Very nice little town, we spent a ton of time there back in 1978.

I remember we were parked there at Piazza Walther when the pope was elected.  If you get a chance to visit Ortisei nearby, that's a nice little town as well.

Any shots of the snowy Brenner pass coming from Innsbruck or did you take the low road?

Awesome, it was a nice place. Thanks for the tip on Ortisei. :)

Only some phone shots out the window.

'ey Joe, good to hear from you.  "Die wetter ist kald, yah?"  So how's the Deutsche?  Italiano?  Had to use this one a lot in Italy...."Dove sono il gabinetti, mi espouse, emergencia."  Are you going on to Switzerland?  If driving, fill up in Livigno.  Tax free zone in Italy.  Kind of like going to a Reservation in the U.S..

Hey Tom, Ja. Sehr kalt!

Didn't really know any Italian, but these Italians spoke German and most were pretty good with English!

We are signing up for German lessons soon, the local community school offers courses.

We've been riding buses, but I hope sometime this next year to rent a car to go to Switzerland/Mandello actually!

Hi Unkept (...and Lindsey) - Thanks for sharing those photos!   :thumb:

Germany is a fabulous place to live and work.  I lived in Aachen, Germany on a 2-year assignment in 2004-2005 for German semiconductor equipment company (AIXTRON-AG).  A great experience and I wish it could have lasted longer.  A few memorable photos...

We liked living in Germany too.  Late 70's.  Son was born in Nuremberg.

Still remember going on a camping trip in May.  Garmisch.  It snowed (of course).  But, the hotels had closed for the season.  So we gathered up everything and went back to Munich.  Found a small Gasthaus to stay at.  When we went down to eat dinner the owners asked if our son could play with theirs (2yr old).  So, while we ate dinner with them the kids played.  Great time.

I've got a "clone" going to school in Mannheim.  His family lives in Karlsruhe. Also know a Guzzi guy in Karlsruhe.
Cloning was a bone marrow transplant.  He's doing great and is a smoking hot guitar player. He's 24ish now.

Hey Y'all.

I know I haven't posted much, but I haven't been traveling too much.

We did go up to our local Zugspitze, the tallest mountain in Germany, and took some pictures the other day. We rode their cable car from the Eibsee up to the top, they were retiring the original to build a new one this Summer... so we had to get a ride in.

If you think 'logically ' you will never understand the German grammar. I've been here 5 years and have yet to figure it out.😠

If you think 'logically ' you will never understand the German grammar. I've been here 5 years and have yet to figure it out.😠

On the contrary...German grammar is Latin Based and exceptionally logical, BUT you'll just need to learn the concepts of masculine, feminine and neuter, and then the concepts of direct vs. indirect objects and how to decline (from declension, not to deny) a noun and how to conjugate a verb.

Durch, Fur, Gegen, Ohne, Um are all prepositions that require the item  that follows to be in the Accusative (direct object).

Aus, Ausser, Nach, Zeit, Von and Zu are all prepositions that require the item that follows to be in the Dative case (indirect object).

Der (masculine), Die (Feminine), Das (Neuter) all mean "The" but indicate whether a noun is masculine, feminine or neuter.  Admittedly some of these defy a little logic...Das Fraulein - The young lady seems odd that it is neuter...but these are more exceptions than the rule.

A certain amount of memorization is required, but eventually you'll see a pattern.

Now constructing a sentence requires a bit of work - as depending on the tense (present, imperfect, present perfect), you'll need to get used to the idea of the verb participle going at the end of the sentence.

After 1-2 years of studying German, you should have the ability to construct good basic sentences, you might not be able to read Der Spiegel, but ordering tickets, poppyseed cake at the bakery or doing daily errands should be enjoyable.  If you're not "getting it", try to find a teacher who can help you see the patterns.

Viel Gluck (Good luck!)

English; me
German; Ich, Mich, Mir

English; you
German; du,dir, dich, Sie, Ihnen/ihnen, Euch, Euer, ihr.

English ; your
German; dein, ihr, euer, Ihren

This is just a small example of the confusing nature of Die Deutsche Sprache.

I know a lot of words. Putting them in a sentence is a complicated matter😁

Here's a good example from one of my many books;
Der Hund biss den Brieftragger. (notice 'den')
The dog bites the mailman.

Den Brieftragger biss der Hund.
Nope. Doesn't mean "the mailman bit the dog", even though that's how an English speaker would read it.
It still means "The dog bit the mailman".

Oh, how I wish that were in the cards!

My current situation isn't really suited to owning a vehicle, and that's fine. The buses, trains, etc. will get me wherever I need to be!

If we are able to stay in Germany after this job stint is up, I'll think about buying a bike more... but that means more expenses, maybe a garage space, etc.

I'm hoping I'll get to rent a Guzzi around Mandello sometime though! I also hope I'm still here for the 100th anniversary party.

Tom, we're living in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, near the Zugspitze and Austrian border.

Es ist schön hier.
