Oh, hey, that is funny that you saw this as I was gearing up to call you anyhow!  I will be heading down there probably early next week to pick this bike up, and I've never bought a used bike that did not need SOMETHING.  So I'd love to swing by your shop and have you take a look.

I am pretty fierce and disciplined when I bid on this stuff.  I just tell myself what my final number is, and wait until there are 30 seconds left in the auction -- literally 30 seconds -- and bid my number, and then at second fifteen, I bid a second number that is 5% more than my final number, under the theory that if I lost by *just* that amount, I would kick myself later.  Bidding earlier in a timed auction serves literally no purpose: you broadcast your intentions, and in effect bid against yourself, because you only bring out the competition in other people.  If the goal is to win, then just WIN....

I was, but it was all getting so elaborate, that I figured this was a case of perfect being the enemy of the good.  So I went for something available NOW and less than 500 miles away.  I figure I can literally turn around and sell this bike (probably at a profit) if I keep yearning for something else.  Though I have heard tell that there are one or two people in this group that own more than one bike....

Heckuva score!

How many miles?

I'm going through a 2001 (80th anniv) EVT right now.  Steering head, swing arm bearings and drive shaft splines had never seen grease, ever.  I'm prepping the tank for POR 15 tank liner/sealer right now due to internal rot (we're catching it in time).  Paint lifts around the filler neck.  Turn signals rotted.  Hoses getting brittle.  Otherwise at 62k it only needs some standard maintenance TLC and refit service to go another 60k.

Adam from Hamlin Cycles (in Danbury, CT) is quite knowledgeable about bikes in that vintage.  Of note is a starter wiring bypass with extra ground and relay.

That is a great deal of bike for the money...especially considering the very reasonable mileage. I believe you've made a good choice.

Personally, I think the EV is Guzzi's finest.  The hydro is at the top of that list.

Thanks everyone!  I will send pix when I get it next week and take a leisurely day to ride it back as I get used to the particulars of heel shifting and linked brakes...

The trick to understanding linked brakes is to treat them like unlinked brakes.  Use the hand brake as normal, and if you need more, add foot pedal.  Or do like some do and use the foot brake for balanced braking and add hand brake if needed.  Learning to use the little knob on the foot lever does take some practice, but it is an easy lesson.

Auction fever, it's whats for dinner ... !

When I bid, it's a little easier, because I really DO have a "final" number, so I let eBay bid it up for me, and if someone beats it, then good for them!

But if it works for you (and it sounds like it did this time), then it's working.   Wouldn't be too sanguine about "turning it for a profit ...", though, unless you know a guy ...

I just enter the maximum amount I'm willing to spend on something into esnipe.com and let it bid for me.

I use the very same system, and have many times won the bidding in the last few seconds; that's why it's called an auction, right? :thumb: Otherwise, what you're looking at is basically a fancy classified ad, which is fine if that's what you want.

I considered bidding on this one too, but didn't think it would sell as low as it did, and I didn't want to go too high. And I honestly do try to be considerate of other potential buyers if I'm not seriously interested in an item, otherwise my bids may just drive up the final price that some other person has to pay. If I can't have it, I want the other guy to buy it as inexpensively as he can.

Again, congrats, and good job! Keep us posted as you fetch it and get 'er home.  :boozing:

PS: There also what looks to be a very nice '04 EVT on Ebay as well, with 4+ days left in the auction.
Seller has a BIN price of $3395.00, bidding is currently stalled at $1500. No affiliation.
