Anyone using Michelin Pilot Activ Tires?
« on: December 29, 2014, 10:49:01 AM »
If so, would you be able to measure the width to see if their sizes are actually accurate? I'm specifically interested in the exact width of Michelin Pilot Activ Rear Tires in a 120/90/18 size (H or V rated)? The reason I ask is that that Avon Tires for example in that same size are in reality 130mm from side to side.

I contacted Michelin, but no luck so far. I also contacted some of the online motorcycle parts stores, and they don't know.

This is the tire in question: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/6158/i/michelin-pilot-activ-rear-tire

Here is Avon's awesome chart for their Roadrider AM26 tires (I wish all manufacturer's did this):

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'll be following this thread, as it is nearly tire-time for two bikes. I've heard that Michelins are difficult to mount/seat...can anyone comment on this?

I have Michelin Pilot 4's on 2 of my bikes. The dealer mounted them without difficulty.

No, but I do use the Pilot Road 2 on the V11. The bike came with a spare set. Once done, I'll probably go with Avon as those have been exemplary on the Benelli, Sport 1100 and Mille GT. I have noticed very good profile retention on the Michelin rear but the tires do not like winter temps. Probably due to compound.

I agree about Manufacturers listing actual widths-The Benelli spec is a 190 rear and there is not a lot of clearance. The Avon 190  is almost a 200 and the 180 is 188 so I went with the 180. Awesome flickability and grip even in winter.

I used the Pilot Activ tires on my Bassa and they were great!

140 section, though, so I can't help with your question.

I use pilot activs on my Jackal and am a real fan of the tire. To the OP I cant help with the sizing, however the question about mounting I can. The pilot activs were easier to mount on my Jackal then the bridgestone battlewings were to put on my v-strom. I use a slightly modified harbor freighter, a mojo bar, couple of tire spoons, some RU glide, a little persuasive language and pop they are on. I am a tire mounting newbie. I have put on 11 tires in the last 15 months (bridgestone, michelin, full-bore) between my two bikes and those of a couple of friends. The Michelins were the easiest to mount. The pilot active is a great tire for my use.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like ejs found something.. and what great find too! Thanks! I'm reposting the image for clarity in this thread, I hope that's OK.

I like this chart even better than Avon's! Michelin's list the Static Width and also the In Use width... Do you guys think that "In Use" width is at the ground perhaps?

Yes, I'm using the Michelin Activ in that exact size.
Do you still need a measurement?

Good tire in my opinion. ;-T

If you absolutely have nothing else better to do  ;D, then sure! - Just so we can confirm that 119mm width. I had to use a wood clamp to get the width dimension reference on my current tires, then I transposed that to a ruler since my caliper's beak wouldn't reach to widest part of the tire.

If you can't get to it, no worries. I'm guessing the chart is accurate.

Thanks again, I think I might be getting these for my G5 - been trying to decide and Santa couldn't get to it either, so these may be the ones.

FWIW I have Pilot Activ's on my Triumph Bonneville and they are the best tire I have had on my Bonneville.  In short, better tread mileage (30 %), as good or better handling and smoother ride than Metzlers, or Avon Road Riders that I have also used on the Bonneville.  The Pilot Activs are available in sizes older bikes often use.

I recently put them on my V7C. I had a rim leak on the front tire, but that may be because the rim was repainted (Breva 750 wheels). NAPA bead seal took take of that issue. I do prefer the Pirelli Sport Demons on that bike.

Does anyone know or have a link to a Pirelli chart like the ones above (specifically for the Sport Demons) showing the static and in use dimensions?

Thank you.
