Obtaining key blanks
« on: December 13, 2021, 04:24:11 PM »
Hey all, I’m looking to keep my stock ignition/starter switch on my 73 V7 Sport. It’s got the Sipea Neiman type switch. Usual story, no key.
I found a replacement for a bunch of dough. Before dumping the cash I figured I’d try and find a blank and take it to a locksmith.

More Btdt advice-

My V7 Sport came to me as a disassembled, frozen engine pile of parts, also with original switch but no keys.  I sourced someone who would key my switch using a ILCO FT43 X109 blank.  Key fit great.  Bike started great.  All was good.  I was young and dumb and had no other advice....

So when I had to later remove the cylinder by pressing the pin, I had no idea that the locksmith had not cut the necessary correct notch on the backside of my new key, as shown on far right, from my eventual replacement key cylinder.  See the round dent from that pin on the key at arrow marked No Notch FAIL! In center.  The key cylinder was damaged in the process and later cracked in half, rendering the original either unobtanium or crazy $$$$$ cylinder and switch dangerously useless.  Not cool.

A Taylor F47 T blank will also work and has the original style overall shape that the ILCO blank doesn't.

Make sure your key is fully cut on both sides if you're using a real original switch & key cylinder.  Hope this helps.
