So,  I just finished the 900 mile service on my Guzzi, which is a 2019 V7iii Stone. (I'm the same one who posted the question about snapping the spark plug in the engine in another thread).   I started it up, and I'm hearing a loud clicking sound.  I know Guzzi engines make all sorts of noises. Searching around through previous threads, I've found that the answer is mostly "yes, that's what they sound like"

And I'm perfectly willing to accept that I just have horrible auditory memory so it seems to be much lounder now, but is the same as before. It was loud enough that I rechecked the valve clearances, which are .10mm intake and .15mm exhaust. Everything is tightened.  All screws are tight on the cover also.  To me the right cylinder seems much louder.  The noise speeds up and slows down as I accelerate. I almost hink that the tappets are hitting the head cover, but like I said, I've checked the clearances.   I notice no performance difference.

Anyway, I made two short videos of the sound, one at idle, and one me just accelerating down my street, to about 30mph.  Can anyone here if there is an issue or am I just being paranoid/mis-remembering what I should hear?

Are you SURE you checked the valve clearances at top dead center on the compression stroke of EACH cylinder?

Way too loud. As has already been said, make sure you are on the correct top dead center, compression. That is louder than my 1400 which are notoriously loud. My V7 is silent in comparison.

I'd say yes, I am positive, but y'all are confirming what I am hearing, so I'm going to do it again.

Unless I am wrong to get to TDC of the compression stroke, I:

take off head covers, remove spark plugs from both cylinders

Jack up rear of bike

Put it in cear and turn rear wheel.

Pick a cylinder (say left) and rotate until the compression stroke (both valves closed, (all the way up) which is after the intake stroke wihich is intake vallve open (down)), then slowly tap wheel until cylinder is at the top (I used a bamboo skewer for my measurement).
adjust valves.
repeart the compressions stroke/tdc procedure for the right side

That is spot on for the TDC positioning technique. It won’t matter in reality, but rotating the wheel forward is historically best.
Yes, that’s way loud. How much oil did you put back in and what grade ?
If it’s loose tappets it sounds like only one per side, but the anomaly is the same each side.
Whatever you have done, it’s the same mistake left and right.
Did you give the correct clearances ?
The exhaust is about twice the inlet typically. Did you get  the clearances the wrong way ‘round ?
How much did you need to alter them and in what direction ?
You didn’t use mm instead of thou’ did you and nipped up the locknuts acceptably ?
Did you replace the plugs with the correct length ones and what side was the broken one in ?

For clarity, the rear wheel gets turned in the same direction it would turn in normal use.
use 5th or 6th gear.
the intake is the one closest to the rear of the bike.
you turn the rear wheel until the valve goes down then comes up. then tap the rear wheel until the stick comes all the way to the top carefully feeling for the piston to reverse and head down. stop there instantly. if not positive go around again, do not go backwards. You can also put a finger over the plug hole and you will feel the compression rising as you turn the wheel.
make sure you don't have two feeler gauges stuck together!
they are set at 4 & 6 thousand or .1MM and .15MM.

Here's a tip on setting Guzzi valve clearances. I'm not familiar with the V7 engine but on the Daytona and big Block engines the cam opening ramps are quite long. What this means is you only need to be around 40 crank degrees over TDC for the cams to be on the opening ramps and with piston dwell time at TDC and using a stick through the spark plug hole it's not hard to get the crank past the piston TDC point when using the stick method, its just not accurate enough. On a BB engine I always use the flywheel marks which I crosschecked when using the TDC full stop method when setting the cam timing. I suggest you use the flywheel marks if they exist on the V7. If you have set the clearances on the opening ramps the exhaust clearances will be too wide on the base circle and be noisy.

Turning in the direction of normal rotation.. after the intake valve opens, then closes.. the piston is starting upward on the firing stroke. Once at TDC on the firing stroke, do the left (S) first, then rotate the engine 270 degrees (again in normal rotation) and do the right. (D)

Thanks again for all the replies.  I went out, redid both sides and now my bike is back to normal.  The intake tappet on the right side had a lot of play with it. I'm not sure if I did it on the wrong stroke or if I accidently moved it when tightening and didn't realize it. I was checking the clearance afterwards also, but perhaps I forgot. I'm not sure. The left side was in better shape, but redid it anyway to be sure, put everything back together and as soon as I started it, I heard the familiar guzzi noise.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help.  I konw I don't post a lot on here, but I've been an avid reader for two years now.

Congratulations on getting the bike together after making a couple of mistakes.I probably would have hauled it to the dealer.

I made a similar mistake on my CX500, the noise is spectacular!
Easy to do, and good on you for double checking!

So you’re saying the left side was ok ?
I was wrong then in my perception that they were both rattly, anyway well done.

sickora, glad you got it sorted.

I thought the same thing when I listened to the video.

I think we could still hear the right side when we were looking at the left.

Most people have done it wrong at one time or another.
Unfortunately, the factory gave us no way to find TDC other than feel. Getting to the front of the engine for a degree wheel is also out of the question. Being a bit of an insensitive bastard I find an old-fashioned round wood pencil with the eraser up top not in the hole works best for me.

In person it was hard to tell. I thought it sounded a little off also, but I couldn't tell if it was the left side, or if the sound from the right side carried over.  It definitely didn't have the loosness of the right side.  No loud clanking sound at al now, though, which makes me happy.  Now I just have to wait for decent riding weather, which looks like will happen in a few days. Probably just in time for all the Cicada's to come...
