I wear wool year round and I purchase mine from REI.  I had a "flooding in the boot" mishap when the temperature was around 40 degrees.  Once I got the flooding stopped my foot was wet but warm. Took about two days to dry the boot out.

Merino wool socks of an appropriate height for your boots work great. As mentioned above, they retain insulative qualities when wet, they don't retain odors and they wick perspiration. They make a great option in any weather. The really good ones (like Smartwool) are available at better camping/backpacking/skiing outlets...

I bought 6 pairs of these after polling all the old soldiers I could-I was in the desert for 3 years and cotton socks disintegrate after about a month.

A year later I bought a dozen more pairs.

They're expensive, but now after 3 in the desert and 5 years at home, not a single sock has worn a hole it in. They are cool in the heat, warm in the cold, don't stink easily and never rub blisters. Simply amazing.

What they said.

I used to get little sore places on my feet, little flat blisters that weren't from pressure and heat, but would show up and then go away, not to mention the occasional little rash.

Went to a foot doctor.  He said quit wearing any sock except 70% up to 100% Merino Wool and these little fungal infections would go away.   The Merino Wool wicks the moisture away from your skin and takes away the environment that the little nasties like to grow in.

Two years now and not one recurrence at all, skin on my feet as healthy as a young dog.   Never anything for me again but Merino Wool!

I'm using the smartwool brand right now.  They'll go a few days without washing if you air them out overnight, and when they do need freshening up any body of water will do.  They also have the traditional advantages of wool without getting too hot In the summer.

The Kiwis make a wool/possum blend sock -perfect for winter.  In summer, you can't beat bamboo socks for softness and odour eating!

Smart Wool or REI's house brand of wool socks.

I wear them more often then not. Wool is warm, wicks away moisture, breathes, cushions, and lasts a long time. I wear Danner boots when I ride (which is most days, even in the rain), even when I am wearing a suit and tie beneath my one-piece outer suit.

Last night, I went to Thorlo's site and saw the offer of a free pair of socks, so I figured, "What the Heck" and ordered a pair. For the $4.95 it cost me for shipping, it's worth trying a pair out.

Don't tell anyone, but we have possums in Massachusetts, too. I've never eaten one, though.

LD Comfort sells very nice short and long socks.  No stink, great comfort, can wash and dry overnight for longer trips.

Also Road Runner sells a nice pair of thicker socks as well...also very comfortable for all day riding.

I talked at length with Susan at Thorlo.  I decided to try their "Uniform Support" sock.  It's supposed to be like the military (?) sock.  I may just buy a few dress western socks too.  I'm interested what you think of your pair, what style are they?

I got mine today. I also went with the Uniform Support socks. I got Blue. They look O.K., I'll try them out tomorrow and see how they feel.
One thing that Thorlo does that I like is they will sell you a pair of socks at their cost to donate to someone in the military.  If I like the socks after I try them, I'll spend twenty bucks so that some poor GI stationed in the back door to hell can at least have feet that don't hurt so bad.

This is really great information.

I wear Starter DriStar athletic socks, primarily because they wick perspiration and they are relatively inexpensive, but they are a synthetic blend with some of the negatives that come with that.

The Thorlo socks look to be worth a try, especially if it only entails the cost of shipping, but which type for motorcycle boots?  I want something that goes over the calf, and all of the versions on their web site look to be ankle socks.

SmartWool sells boot-height merino socks.  Haven't been able to "wear out" a pair yet.

Well I spent most of the day (from 10 to 4) on my feet walking the halls of a hospital in these fancy socks. They stayed cushy under foot all day. They feel pretty good. Are they worth $12.00 a pair to me? Probably not. But I'm just a poor safe patient handling equipment guy.😔
