Phone Scammers are puke!
« on: January 10, 2019, 07:16:02 PM »
Two days now I am being bombarded by a computer voice telling me there are issues with my iCloud account and I need to contact Apple.  Press 2 to be connected to a tech support.  Press 2 if I want to hang up.  Been happening constantly.  I have caller ID so I can ignore the calls.  But, I can't ignore the ringing.  Might be important.  I at least need to look.  BTW, I do not own an Apple product or use any of their services.

This afternoon I went out for a few errands.  When I came back my voice recorder had t his:
2:36pm then nineteen minutes later at 2:55 then twenty-three minutes later at 3:18 then twenty-two minutes later at 3:40.
I had already cleared my voice storage queue several times today because the incoming calls were stacking.

I did pick it up once earlier today just to press 2 for the hang up.  Why would one have to select a number to hang up?  Why not just HANG UP?!

I wonder how busy tomorrow will be.  Where is that 'dead horse' emoji?

We have Comcast triple play and when these calls start simply go onto Comcast and block them.

The do not call list or remove me from the call list is not effective. Nor does it happen.

My daughter and I fight over the phone when we see these calls popping up on the caller ID. We are especially fond of the young Indian gentleman from Weesa (known in the USA as Visa). I'll either put the phone up to a Youtube video of cows mooing and tell them I'm working in the barn and they have to talk louder or them I'm lonely and want to talk on a more intimate level or ask them to describe what they are wearing. Its a win when they start cursing at me and I then tell them I love the dirty talk.

We had that exact same problem up to a couple months ago.  Seven to eight "spam" calls a day, sometimes more.  The way it works, if you answer, even if you instantly hang up, it just encourages them, and they can verify your number as a "live" number that someone will answer and they can sell that info in addition to working their own scam.

Then we got a CPR CallBlocker V5000 and plugged it into a spare phone jack.   Preloaded with the most common robo-call numbers and patterns.   If it's a scammer number or robo-call, your phone doesn't even ring - on the other end, they hear one ring or two (caller ID has to kick in) and then silence.   Dead number to them.

If one gets through, you just push the big red button on the front to add it to the list (that number might be one that 30 scammers use).

In two months, we're down to one call every two days that gets through - we've blocked 32 additional numbers.   I like these ideas to "play" the ones that get through ... !

Lol, great to hear of someone else who loves to give them payback when I have the time. I play the hard of hearing farmer who has a blind mule for sale and is that what they are calling about. Then as they attempt to further tell me their business I insist that the mule can still pull a plow and continue my sales pitch. When I sense they are about to hang up I tell them "hold on Gertrude, my wife is coming in from milking the cows and will talk with them" at that point I just go on doing something until the dirtbags finally hang up. I know👿

I used to give telemarketers what I called the phone rodeo when I was in my 20's. Sometimes I miss the days before the internet.

One of my favorite gags was giving long distance providers the business. (I was not alone in doing this one, but gave it my own twist. ) When the long distance carriers
MCI, AT&T etc. would call and ask if you would like to be on their 10cents a minute plan including weekends, I'd tell them I'm extremely interested and let them give me their pitch while I'd go and pour another drink. After they were done I'd ask if they were sending the checks weekly or bi-weekly. The argument would commence with my side of it being that "you offered me 10 cents a minute which is about $500.00 per week before taxes" . Sometimes their supervisor would get involved.
After that ended if they were still on the phone I'd tell them I was interested in a  friends and family plan because I was an orphan.

There was also a company called Great Expectations which was a dating service. I'd confess my loneliness and thank them for coming to my rescue, laying it one really thick.
Before giving my credit card and full name, I'd confess that I was born with both male and female genitals , and how I so hoped they could find someone for me. Usually there was dead silence after that. Sometimes they'd hand up and I'd call them back.

188 numbers in my phone marked as "do not answer".  Yesterday, a live voice on the other end went off on me when I ask if she was naked, because I was.  I told her this call is being recorded.  She came back with a another nasty comment.  I said, "I am not recording, your Boss is".  She hung up immediately. I guess she realized her mistake.  My phone is good for one thing, making phone calls.

Cookie says about 10 times yesterday and maybe 5 times today she got a bunch of similar calls only it was ‘microsoft’ warning her of her laptop being ‘compromised from several countries. Please change your IP password. Press 1 to start this process.’ If she let it go to voicemail, sometimes a message was left, sometimes not.

We disconnected the house telephone 10+ years ago.

On the cell - if the caller isn't in my address book, then I simply do not answer.  If it's important then they will leave a message.
I love caller ID

I bought a new laptop a couple weeks ago and the other day I was in the garage and my wife came out and said the computer was spewing an automated message. It was a microsoft warning about watching pornographic material telling me i needed to call them ASAP to stop them from calling the appropriate authorities. I told my wife don't worry its a scam. She asked how I knew. I told her I only watch porn on her computer

We would, but no cell signal here, and the satellite is too subject to weather to depend on it for a phone ....

I tried pranking my one-every-other-day "Visa Fraud Alert" call ... I didn't hit the CPR red button, I pressed "3" to speak to a representative, which I realize flags me as a "live number", but it's worth it.

I actually got put on "hold" for about a minute, then a girl answered.   I only got 3 Gumby-style "Hello?  Is this the telephone?"s out before the hussy hung up on me!   Whatever happened to salesmanship and hanging-in-there?

I think you guys have been riding them too hard and they're getting wise ...

As I get the BS calls, I go into my recent calls and block the number. Had one this morning come in twice while I was on the phone, than again a few minutes after I had terminated my call. Same number all three times. I blocked seconds after the third call.

At some point, they will call back identifying as a different number but you can at least ease off on the aggravation. I should qualify that this with Android. I would assume Apple can do this as well.
