Somehow I thought the various versions of Cali III were just different paint schemes.  Was there a substantial difference between models?

Cal III was a 1000 (949).  Available from 1987-1993.

Then, they bumped the displacement. That made it the Cal 1100 (1064) from 1994-1997.  Available EFI made it the Cal 1100i.

1998 saw the big facelift and brought us the EV.

Then followed with 99 Bassa / 00 Jackal/ 01 Special / 02 Stone / 02 Special Sport / 03 Aluminum / 03 EV Touring / 04 Titanium / 07 Vintage.

Sam Stone, came home, to his wife and family, after serving in the conflict overseas.

Never seen Prine on a bike but I bet he'd ride Guzzi if he did.  So would that Dylan fellow too.  Everybody must get stoned, you know.

Was it a "Stone Metal" or just "Metal"? (honestly asking).

2002 and 2003 availability.  As I recall, it was first referred to as "Stone Chrome", then became "Stone Metal".

And, oddly enough, there was a Stone Metal availablie with glossy black fuel tank.

In view of recent legislative trends my vote is ...whoa dude......Californi a Stoner.   I forsee a popularity resurgence of this bike in the west coast just based upon the name.

hmm, I don't remember that.

DIDN'T the Metal have dual disc brakes? Was it the mini-boards or did it have pegs?

It was just a Jackal/Stone with a chromed tank sporting a red stripe.  Black fenders.  Single disk.  Pegs.

I almost bought an '02 Stone Chrome.  The dealer had that one and an '03 Stone Metal (black version).  I bought a BMW F650GSD instead.

Cal III was a 1000 (949).  Available from 1987-1993.

1998 saw the big facelift and brought us the EV.

From the several posts responding to my question it looks as though the various models were essentially light changes of physical features and paint/trim around the essential Cal III.  Is that fairly close?  I have been glad the basic machine seems to soldier on, just changing clothes with the seasons.

The very first few EVs had a red circle around the "EV".  Was that the 1998?  For some reason I had thought it was a couple of years earlier than that.  Mine is a '99.  As much as I disliked the Tonti style when it came out in 1975, when I got on that one I was willing to overlook the appearance because it was such a delight to ride.  After several years I still like the EV's lines and get along with it pretty well but my attention wanders when a Convert clatters past.

V11 EV was new for 1998 and a big deal for Guzzi.  The bike had several hundred detail changes from the 1997 California 1100.

The first EV's had the red spot around "V11" with a small "EV" next to the "11".

Yes, The Cal III, Cal 1100, Cal EV, etc are "basically" the same bike.  However, everything is also different.

From '97 to '98 brakes, forks, fenders, dash, bars, seat, wheels, chrome fender trim, headlight, turn signals, etc., etc.  were changed.

From the EV came the Bassa, Jackal, etc., etc., which were detail changes of the '98 EV.

When I was resigned to buying a Jackal, before buying I had decided to refer to it as a Chacal as in "Ici Chacal" in part admittedly to chafe the "Gootsie" crowd.

Later with the Calvin in addition to verbally dropping the Vintage, I was happy to have it removed with the re-paint. Now it's just a California by me.

I think I'd be plowing the "Stone" under as well - a little too OCC for me.

It's not like it SAYS Stone anywhere on the NEW Stone...

I always figured that if I had a Cali Stone I'd have just added a "D" to the sidecovers.

Of course, when I repainted the Jackal I didn't bother applying new decals saying JACKAL to the sidecovers either though...

Meh, it's all just a name... I think Shakespeare said something about that...

"Valvole Idrauliche" may be overly ethnic, but perhaps "Hydro Stones" will work.  I blanched in proper outrage when Mandello anointed those little poppers with the revered name.  Is nothing sacred?

One can only wonder what the hell they were thinking using the same name again on a totally different bike.

Would you have liked it better if they'd called it California Pietra, or V7 Pietra ?

I didn't really care for the JACKAL decal on the sidecover also. Had them repainted without like Kev M. People would ask if that was my handle or nickname. And yes, adding a D to the end of STONE, maybe offset a little, would be great. 8)

Just call it a late model Tonti. Not really much difference in any of them from the late 90's to the end of Tonti production. Even with that broad description, you have a pretty unique bike.

I believe that was flint orange, limestone white, slate, and I forget the ugly one. Good thing nobody told marketing it looked like a pumpkin or we'd have the california vegetable. How's your breva tomato doing?
