OK,  I just purchased a 2002 California EV with 35,000 miles on the clock.  I was wondering if someone could come up with a checklist of maintenance items to run through.  I have the owners manual and its schedule, but was wanting to know if there were other things to check.  I plan on starting at the front, fork oil and steering head bearings,  and working my way back. Just need a checklist and I can search the details. Hey what did they do with the oil filter?

For starters:

Change all fluids (oil, transmission, rear drive, fork, brake)
Check adjust valves
Drop sum and check for swarf
Check wheel bearings
Clean and lube cables
Check all fasteners
Clean inspect and lube drive splines
Check wheel bearings
Clean and inspect all electrical connection
Battery load test
Inspect and lube swing arm bearings
Clean out fuel cell
New fuel filter

In addition to what has already been listed I would check the 'snap ring' retainer in the rear wheel cush drive assembly.
Not sure if the 2002 has a similar style as to the 2003 but there are threads here showing what the issues are and how some of us have addressed them

Tell us more about the bike.  What condition is it in?  What are the known problems?  Is it a hydro?  If so, what do you know about its history?  What are your plans?  Is it a runner or do you plan to do a teardown/overhaul?

the oil filter was located right in the dirty oil.. in the sump.. you drop the pan, it's not difficult just a lot of screws. don't miss the center bolts (4).
we put a big hose clamp on the new oil filter to keep it from unscrewing itself.. REALLY! do a search.

Sorry the oil filter reference was a joke.  My plans for the bike are to make it a keeper.  I've seen the snap ring thread and that's the kind of stuff I was looking for {think its on page 1280 of the forum}  The bike is in excellent shape.  The fold down backrest pivot bolts show a little rust and the black and chrome tank has minimal loosening of paint around fuel filler {not noticeable unless you were looking for it}  Very clean shape. PO had it for 2 years and 2000 miles.  It is so clean I'm headed to Wal-Mart  for depends cause I'm tickled sh-tless.  My 12 year old son makes me smile by walking through the house and saying Moto Guzzi under his breath when he's around me.

If you fuel cap has plastic guts, do a key check to see how hard it is to unlock.  That plastic apparently isn't happy with modern fuels and tends to swell, slowly.....it will eventually stick so hard you'll be sitting at a gas station near empty wondering what now??  Plenty posts on the subject.
