Title: Broke brake light bracket
Post by: aklawok on July 02, 2022, 02:31:48 AM
Went on a late night ride yesterday, when I got home I found that the bracket holding the " coffee can" had snapped. Have heard that this is a common problem for the California Vintage, so not surprised.
Took it apart this morning (not very intuitive) and see how poorly was the design . MG want $245 for replacement, my sphincter ( wallet) said no,no...no!
And I brought it to a local welder who said it can be fixed. Not so sure.
Has anyone else had any luck repairing one of these?
Will post a pic when I get it back.

Welders can work miracles, cosmetics may suffer.

A little cheaper in TX but not too much, then shipping.   They made a second one that was so called improved, can't say it's different part number. Have him weld an extra piece of sheet metal on it, they get vibes from swinging fender.

I shared this photo of the ‘new’ and ‘old’ shape taillight bracket back in 2008 and just found it again.
The old shape broke fairly quickly, the welding held a bit longer but eventually failed.

I’ve had no problems with the the new shape. The Cali now has over 71,000 miles of London potholes and speed bumps.

If you plan on keeping the bike, personally, I would get the part while you still can.

thanks for that! will try to have the old one fixed, but not very hopeful.

EBay listing for tail light bracket. DNK if original or newer , stronger type. No connection to seller, just passing it along. At least the price is right (Guzzi Content)

Good score.
Could you post a picture when you get it?
I’d be interested to know if Guzzi has changed the part and if the taillight bracket is an even newer design than the one I got.
at that price either one will do. from the pics. looks to have the gussets/ newer one than my '07. will post pics.
FYI from the fitment listed:

When you replace it, whatever you can do to reinforce it and lower the vibration will help prevent it from breaking again.

Some guys with skills and equipment have welded in small angle iron reinforcement; like others have suggested here, I zip tied in a small 1"? piece of coolant hose.

I had mine 3d Printed.  IT has held up well to both UV and vibration for past two years.  I may have posted let me do a search to see If I can find pictures.

After I lost part of my tail light due to the world class frost heaves we have here, I made a support piece out of 1/8" UHMW plastic. It's not laser cut, but used a skill saw on some scrap from one of my sleds; it's commonly used here for the bed of toboggan sleds. Hopefully it'll keep the light attached a while longer. If you don't have a source there, PM me and I'll find you some.
