Return of the Ducati SS (2017)
« on: July 24, 2016, 04:39:40 PM »
http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/ducati/2017-ducati-supersport-s-leaked.html

From the photo, we can see a new fairing design covering what looks to be the chassis of the Monster 1200. The shape of the trellis and the laydown shock look like they came straight from the Monster, as does the swingarm. The engine, however, will be the four-valve 937cc Twin that also powers the Hyperstrada family.

At that displacement, the SuperSport comes just 18cc short of the 959 Panigale but Ducati makes it clear the two bikes fit different needs. While the mini-Panigale is a racebike that can be ridden on the road, Ducati describes the SuperSport as a sporty road bike that will be “accessible also to new comers to the Ducati world thanks to its easy riding, weight, performance and price.”

This Supersport’s taller seat, different exhaust design and apparently longer seat-to-peg distance just might cure everything MO didn’t like about the current Monster. A Ducati sportbike with relatively high bars and an unobstructed right footpeg area sounds like just what the doctor ordered, but judging from the dramatically scooped seating area we might not be getting the longer seat-to-peg distance for which we’re so desperately longing.

Ducati will reveal full details including specifications for the 2017 SuperSport and SuperSport S in November at the EICMA show in Milan.

LOL

Right!  I bet the color-matched saddlebags will be slick!

I wonder if it has electronic cruise control.

Depends on the price, ergos, performance and maintainability.  It's based on the Monster.  It doesn't have a "beak" on it, isn't naked and doesn't look like a dirt bike.  It looks like a sport bike for the road but not a hyper track tool.

SPORT-tourer.

No, not a fat pig ST-1300 or R12RT.  Those are tourers in my book...

Might need to look at an aftermarket seat to be a sport/tourer. At least in that picture there does not seem to be much of a seat there. At least not for my old butt anymore.

Some riders consider a Goldwing a "sport-tourer".  Eye of the beholder, I guess.

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/2016/july/ducati-project-1312-supersport/

“The bike is brand new, it’s just the frame that comes from XDiavel and Monster trellis frame. There are some components used on other bikes but otherwise it’s a completely new bike.

“The Supersport is not an entry-level sportsbike. That would be a bike for beginners, this is not that. This is a sportsbike designed for the road.

"There will be two models, the Supersport and the Supersport S. The main difference is that the S has Öhlins suspension front and rear, and a removable rear seat cowl.

"The dash is completely new with new functionality, and is ready for the Ducati multimedia system, the same as on Multistrada. The headlamp shape is completely new, the shape was inspired by Panigale but the headlamp has daytime running lights. The exhaust is new as well as the complete fairing.

“This bike is for customers who desire a sportsbike with versatility and with road focus performance. It is for riders who don’t want a bike for trackdays so this is a bike that is sporty and at the same time comfortable in terms of seating position. It is not in the Panigale family.

“In terms of performance and price performance it is a step behind the 959 Panigale, but it is a completely different family, the only link between the two is sportiness.

“We made this because we wanted to target the customer who loves sportsbikes and wants street legal performance of one. This is designed for the road. It is still truly a sportsbike but for the road. We investigated the market and saw very interesting potential for these types of customers.

“The displacement is the same as the Hypermotard 939, but the problem is we applied mechanical modification and electronic tuning of the engine and even the attachment of the engine to the frame is different. With this frame, the engine is a stressed element. So it is 939 displacement, but not really the same engine, because 80% of it is new.

“The start price will be between £10,000 and £10,800 (12-13,000 Euros) for the Supersport, for the S model I cannot say."

The new Supersport is also certain to boast ABS, three rider modes: sport, touring and urban – each linked to the 8-level traction control, Diablo Rosso II tyres and the requisite (but missing on the 959 Panigale) single-sided swingarm. Both models will have fully adjustable suspension.

Expect a full unveil at the Milan show this Autumn, and for the Supersport to arrive in Ducati dealers in late Spring/early Summer 2017.

For more on the new Ducati Supersport, see this Wednesday's MCN – on July 6.

Gees, thanks for the update Rock.

For $12k, it can certainly put the Jones on.

With a Bandit and the Sport, I am not sure what I'd do.  Sorta redundant.  Gosh if they made it lime green and a red frame ...!   (OF course those aren't Duc colors.)  but RED,  whoooee-sir.

Luckily I get over these lustful moments over time.  I remember when I had that crush on the 1400 Cal, then R1200RT, Suzuki GSXS1000.....

I've gotta work it out.  Hopefully this phase'll be all over by the time the bike is actually released.

Brother, that's the truth!  With Guzzi abandoning SPORT-touring with nothing in the pipeline, this may be a fallback for me.

I like Ducatis, have ridden  and owned them, and would love to see the Supersport S with some C-Bow Hepco Beckers!

Nice bike, but Ducati's in terms of long distance ownership still have those high priced maintenance costs. Yeah, they have lengthened the valve adjustment period but it seems to still cost $700 plus for that work depending on location.

I'd still like to own a Ducati someday, but not one that would attract high mileage.

What is the valve adjust interval, now?  12,000 miles?

Only expensive if you're riding a lot of miles.

As one of several bikes in my garage, I can see that being about once every two to three years.

Assuming maintenance intervals are the same as the Hyper that shares the same motor, it will be 9K for oil service and 18K for the valve service. It is a big, expensive job, but that interval is pretty long. It's not an impossible job for a skilled home mechanic either. You do need to visit the dealer to reset the service indicator, which is annoying.

If you desire a Ducati there is only one way to satisfy that lust. Own one. I did. Loved it. Done. Might not have sold it had I found the closest dealer sooner.

Yes, only applicable for high a mileage bike. As an example, if it costs $7-900.00 per visit to the dealer my Norge would cost me an additional $3,500 to $4,500 and by that logic I should buy a used Ducati minus that amount of money. Last time I looked, that isn't hard to find via Craigslist.

it's not meant to be a full-on sportbike.

It's meant to be a standard-based sporty bike, like a V11 Lemans/Sport minus (100lbs and plus 30hp).

Wow!  That was my first thought too, Terblanche had the worst styling and this looks like one of his. The Multi-Strata, the 999, the post-1998 900ss bikes... glad he has moved on. Since then he's been with Norton, Confederate, and Royal Enfield for brief stints.

A lot of excitement about this bike on the Ducati ST board, no surprise.  The way it's being rolled out, no hard bags, no top case option but heated grips and ABS.  So maybe an ST is on the way, but this isn't it yet.
