What's this red stuff on my '83 SP1000 head?
« on: May 17, 2021, 08:18:01 PM »
The pic shows what I'm talking about, It's glossy red and hard. Epoxy?  Applied during manufacturing to stop a pinhole leak? It seems to be stuck fast. Not that I've tried to take it off.

Is this the first time you've removed the rocker cover ? Is it something from any of the previous owners ?
In other words , do you know how long it's been there ?  Peter

I'd go with Giacomo Agostinni's dried blood.  It will make the bike worth a lot more at re-sale.

It looks like this stuff.

High Tack is really hard to remove, though, and I wouldn’t use it on both sides of a valve cover gasket.  I’ve seen it put on only one side of a gasket (here, the cylinder side) to hold the gasket in place through multiple removals of the cover.

It's the first time I've removed the rocker cover, but this bike has had at least 2 other owners. No idea how long it's been there. There is no sign of this red stuff anywhere else on either head.

Perhaps there was a pore and a wicking Loctite product was used to seal it?

Unfortunately, that's what the Italian Men in Black want you to think.  The same people who debunk UFO's have also spent decades hiding the fact that Giacomo Agostini loved Moto Guzzi's and really enjoyed tinkering on them.

He probably cut one of his fingers while adjusting the valves..........

The bike should be worth at least $50,000 on Bring a Trailer.

That's the blood, sweat and tears that the Guzzi team put into every bike. :thumb:
