New to me V85TT
« on: October 22, 2021, 01:53:42 PM »
I have just bought a 2 year old (2019) V85TT with 16,000km (10,000 miles) on the clock.I took it for my first good ride yesterday and, half way through, the oil warning light appeared on the dash. I checked the level which was about half full and rode quietly home where I changed the oil.I used 10W 60 full synthetic and added the right amount according to the riders manual (1760cc or 107.4 cu in) This put the level in the same place as before. On starting the engine the warning light refused to go out.

The manual tells me that the oil level should be at the top mark in the window when full and 1760cc does not seem to be enough to my mind.

I am thinking that the oil pressure sensor is faulty and that the manual has a typo where the amount is given. Any other ideas out there?

Also, is there  diagnostic software available?

Thanks

Dave

Guzzidiag will tell you if it’s thrown a code and you can track it from there.
If you read up on “New and improved Guzzidiag tutorial” here on the forum, it will tell you how to work through the issue.
Yours is the 7SM ECU.

1760cc is the correct amount, and will easily fill the sight glass.  Are you checking with the bike on the centre stand, or if you don't have a centre stand, arrange some other means to keep the bike vertical?  Did you also replace the engine oil filter?

Way back in my remaining brain cell, there was some propaganda released about the reason for the reduced oil capacity.  I'll look for it and if I find it, send it to you.  I'll need an email address, text or call me @ 021 947280.

I can also send you pdf copies of the owner's manual, parts manual, and workshop manual.

Guzzidiag is the diagnostic software of choice available for free on the interweb. If you're thinking of remapping, talk to Beetle at griso.org.

The manual wants you to check the oil after it is fully warm, so your level after changing the oil may not be correct.

1760cc is correct, it fills mine up just fine. This may be a thing with one of your oil sensors, I'm not sure the difference but there are two on the bike.

There is a reduced fill capacity for the final drive than what is likely in your manual, but engine oil is as it says.

Mine shows a lower oil level when on the center stand.  Check it upright with both wheels on the ground.

This bike was sold to me as a 2019 model. It has no centre stand and the oil level was checked by placing a wooden block under the side stand so that it was almost level. If the level is correct then what would make the warning light come on and how do I get it to go off. Can anyone tell me where to find the oil pressure sensor, please.

Oil sensor is No 30 in the diagram.

R U sure you don't to email the manuals I have, Dave?

Edit:  Part number is 1A014570, described as a "Minimum Oil Pressure Sensor".

Is the oil filter secure?  No extra or missing O rings?  Might be losing some pressure there.

I'm not familiar with the oil filter set up on the V85s, but on other guzzis, it's not unheard of for the oil filter base gasket to separate from the filter, left behind and stuck in place creating a bad seal with the new filter.

I'm not sure of the design and if the "hose clamp" fix is prudent on the V85s, but it could be something as simple as a loose oil filter, idk?

To the op, it probably is a bad sensor or connections, but it would be a good idea to confirm that there is oil pressure and flow; ignoring the warning light and continuing to ride the bike could be an expen$ive choice.

My sensor was coroded at the connection in 14,000 miles. It was also a bit loose. it would turn a 1/8 turn but never showed a problem.

Thank you all for your replies. Apparently the bike had the oil temperature sensor(?) replaced under warranty. I am told that this is the one on the right side of the crankcase under the cylinder. I removed the wire from the end of this sensor, cleaned it and lubed it and replaced the wire. The red warning light went out and, at this point, still is.

Jeez that’s good news.
I hope it stays that way for you, I love it when you can diagnose and fix a potentially serious problem. Just part of the journey to understanding that these things provide.
Good luck... :thumb:
PS.
Is your daughter still riding the V50 if I’m not mistaken ?

Yes Huzo, my daughter still rides her V50.We went on a club ride last weekend together and her riding is improving every time she goes out. She sat on the new bike when I brought it home and proclaimed that she will not ride it solo until she has ridden it pillion with me. That will be happening this weekend.
