VIN locations for US model 1975 850t?
« on: March 28, 2023, 11:50:02 AM »
The vin plate on my 1975 850t shows signs of tampering including removal and replacement of the plate.  Where are the motor and frame numbers located?  This is a US model thanks

The engine number is stamped into the case near the fill plug/dipstick. There is no number stamped into the frame on US market bikes.

I have a 1975 850T (with filter) with DGM 12504 0M stamped into the frame. What is that #?

Turin, please depict your frame tag full on so we can see the numbers.

The DGM number is Guzzi's internal ID or part number for that frame type.

Correct.  I have seen 2 V7 Sports titled with a "VIN" using the DGM part number in error.  I gently tried to educate a seller that he should have his VIN corrected before selling to avoid future repercussions and he threatened to send Guido to silence me.   :violent1:

NHTSA has required all vehicles mfg ed since 1981 to have 17 digit VIN numbers. Prior to "81 there was no VIN standard. Many foreign manufacturers used anything they wanted, usually a number stamped on the engine.

FYI,,,,,, I recently applied for a bonded title here in Illinois because the bike didn't have a title. I had the Ill. State police inspect the bike too and they wrote the engine number on the inspection report to be used as the VIN #, got all my paperwork together mailed it in and then was told by the Secretary of State in Springfield, Ill in the bonded title  dept. that they want the frame number to be used because you can always change out the motor so I had to resubmit all the paperwork again.  Got my new title in the mail today ,,,,  :thumb:
