First World Problem
« on: March 29, 2023, 10:45:09 PM »
I fully realize how much of a privileged (epithet insert) I sound like here but:

I just bought a 1998 Ducati 916 from a friend and parked it in my office to look at. It’s just gorgeous, I don’t want it banging around the garage and I’m too stiff and old to really ride it right.

A few days later the same friend offers me his MV Agusta F4 1000 for the same price.  I don’t really have room or funds now for another bike.

Should I hold onto the 916 or dump it and buy the F4?  Both are in comparable good running condition, mechanically very well cared for, bodywork clean and shiny but a few small scratches here and there. Some small variances from stock in both cases.  Here is a picture of the 916. Following is a link to the same model and color MV.

I vote F4. Or a storage unit and both.

The 916 will have more lasting value - hard parts are available and will remain mostly available whereas the F4 changes every year and you can’t get parts after a while.  MV Agusta is really Cagiva and nothing they make holds its value.

So you know my vote.

Kick back in my exec leather chair and put up my feet on an artistically pleasing Ducati 916 and light my Cohiba with a $100 bill.....problems I don't have for sure!

Mhh - Office

Large chunk of glass, a few tasteful brackets and with both bikes you could have the ultimate desk!

But if only one - the F4 - it's one of the few bikes I'd buy just to hang on the lounge wall and look at .... domestic management permitting

^^^ This. In addition, if you ever ride the MV the maintenance/repair costs will make the 916 seem as inexpensive as an SV650.

Well you know... its hard to think that in that combo that the 916 is the common, garden variety of the two.. If you can only have the one.. and its main place is going to be sitting, and being looked at like the art form they are, I would clearly go with the MV. I mean the 916 is a masterpiece.. in style, and performance. It set a new style bar at the time..  but the MV was just a step extra. More exclusive, a little more high end style, and just.... extra. If you were planning on riding them at all, I would go with the 916.

I had an MV identical to this one.

My mate had a 916 and still has.
The MV was for sure a head turner but little else. The Ducati will still be a classic in 30 years..
Go the Duke.

You ever wonder why people hate lawyers, Ben?

That is a hell of a problem to have! I love it!

If this was a rider, I would say Ducati...  But since it will spend most time as - objet d'arte - and maybe get a roll out/fire up/ride a handful of times over the next few years---  YOU GOTTA GET THE MV!

I'd also bet you can flip the 916 no problem!

Hmmm, so the office storage strategy is just as finite as the other never big enough venues? Glad I found out before I got serious about  upping my game….

Seriously, I would keep the 916. No hesitation.  Imho, like many other reincarnation schemes, the whole modern MV was more of a grab at old glory days for profit than any true evolution of the brand.  The 916 isn’t.  It is a benchmark motorcycle of a marque that kept going through thick & thin and has yet to die.

Not sure what other bike is accurately identified by only its engine displacement without another word or letters to clarify exactly what it is.  ?

Edit- save your $$.  Build a riser. Add a green frame 750SS to have the perfect trio.  or stay on lower budget and put a pristine early F3 single or Elite 200SS on the riser instead.

Meh.  Get the other bike and bring it into the office.

Throw out a book case if you have to.  Get a smaller desk.  Whatever it takes.

Ben. Looks like the sale of the G5/T3 is poised to provide funds to pay for the MV. So, buy the MV, move it into the office, admire it, and the 916,and make a decision  on which is a keeper later on. You have plenty of time to figure it out so enjoy them both. Steve

The 916 and the F4 were both designed by the brilliant Massimo Tamburini, an original founder of Bimota. I think both bikes are beautifully designed and executed. You've got a tough choice to make, if you must.

Well, Ben - you've already got several Ducatis.

Have you ever owned an MV?  Now's your chance.

Have you got a birthday coming up? Ask Sara.....

Anniversay coming up? "Sara, look what I bought for you!"
(Okay, that's dangerous - but how badly do you want it?!    )

Good Luck with your decision!

I love the feedback. I called John to get more details. It’s a 750 not a 1000 MV which throws it over the top. He also started it in his barn and it just ripped. I’m going to get it. His prices were very reasonable. 6k for the Ducati and 7k for the MV.  I may need to liquidate at some point soon to get out of this corner, but not today.

If the bike(s) aren't for riding why not have a professional take some nice pictures and have then framed to hang on the wall, then sell the bikes?

The white on the Ducati kills the look for me personally.  It should either be all red or gone.  I find the MV much more pleasing to sit and look at.

You could always expand your office.  The fact that you can afford to live in Mass and have bikes is definitely a testament to your privilege.

My parents paid more in taxes per year on the home they raised  us in, than my yearly house payment in the southeast.

I completely agree on the white TWA.   The SPS tail was added and doesn’t belong.  Neither do the fairing graphics which look great but weren’t on a 1998. I’m going to try to source a red tail and nose if they aren’t too expensive.

I'm going to steer well clear of politics, but simply say that Cape Cod is my home and so very difficult to leave.  It’s a great place to raise kids and the fishing is good.  It’s motorcycle hell though. I could park a Brough Superior at the store and no one would notice. Park a new Tesla and the old ladies flock around.

My dining room.  Guess you can see which way I lean.  Though if I could score a reasonable 916 or 996 I'd have to think pretty hard about putting it on the opposite wall.

The first time you rip that MV up past 12k you'll get addicted.  Neither is very comfortable for very long though.
