Title: Western Adventure NAR, Ouray
Post by: alanp on April 08, 2022, 07:46:18 PM
Announcing the 2022 Ouray Western Adventure NAR!
When; Three nights, Thursday Sept. 8 to Sat. Sept. 10
Where; Ouray, CO KOA, 225 County Rd. 23, Ridgeway, CO
800-562-8026

This is a “do it yourself” NAR, meaning you need to make your own reservations for camping or moteling.  The KOA offers campsites and cabins, and the nearby town of Ouray has many motel options.  We will meet for dinner in either Ouray or Ridgeway each night, and there will be group rides on Friday and Saturday which will include the incredible scenery the area is known for.  More details will follow.

I know it is only April, but you are encouraged to make your reservations ASAP as camping reservations fill up extremely early these days.

If you plan to attend, please let everyone know by posting here.  If you have a reservation and would like someone to share you cabin or campsite, again post it here.
Looking forward to seeing many old and new faces!  If you have any questions or need more info please let me know.

Do you have a particular part of the campground in mind?  The map on the KOA website now looks different than the place where we stayed last time.

I have reserved campsites 50a and 50b.  If you are interested in being near the “Guzzi group” take a look at the online campground map and choose a nearby site.

Sounds like fun, I need to see if I can clear my calendar. Any dirt road adventures included in the Rides?

I will be riding my V7II and will stick to pavement, and will lead the Ouray, Durango, Dolores, Ridgeway loop on Friday.  Others will likely be on Stelvios or V85TTs, and there are several good dirt road options.  If you care to research, one option is to ride Last Dollar Road from Telluride to Ridgeway as a “shortcut” on the Friday loop.  Another good option is to ride Owl Creek Pass from Ridgeway to Cimarron.  And of course there are dozens of other options in the area from the mild to the extreme.  We can keep this discussion going and see if anyone would like to lead a dirt ride or two.  I am not an authority on dirt riding…

Alan,
I will be joining you in Ouray. I don't know if I'll be on my V&II or the V85TT.

There are several dirt road routes shown on the Butler map.
From Norwood to Montrose, Sanborn Park Rd/Dave Wood Rd, 47Z/530/510. about 40 miles. IIRC two lane maintained dirt road.
About half way on that road you can turn NW onto Divide Road, 402, 81 miles to Hwy 141.  I took the fork to Gateway; I think it was steep in sections.  I remember the Divide Road to be mostly one lane and not regularly maintained.  PS: this is a hunting area.
I rode these roads 15 or 20 years ago, and not since.  I don't know current conditions except that Butler Maps shows them as Recommended Dirt Roads.

I'd like to get my Ducati up there.  Perhaps the Greenie too if I take the hauler.  Will cross my fingers and see.

Booked site 50 for Friday and Saturday.  It's a few years since I've been there, but I remember it being a good time and I'm looking forward to it.  I'll bring the Stelvio but probably stay on the pavement.

I remember well the NAR Mike aka Rocker59 put on at Ouray a few years back, a great way to connect with the guys from your part of the globe and an excuse to buy a bike to get there.
I doubt I will be there this time though.

It was 2013.  Nine years ago.  Time flies!  It was a great time!  I'm glad Alan has picked up the banner and continued the series, and I hope to make it out there again sometime, when life isn't in the way!

I was there too, in 2013.  I was a bit late to the party, getting there after dark on the first day (had a slow puncture).
I remember Kiwi and Rocker.  We scooted down to Gateway with a bunch of the other rally rousers and visited the Auto Museum there.
I captured a photo of Rocker next to his favourite automobile.  Can't remember the model, though.  There are some amazing cars in that Museum.

If I recall correctly, the water cooled BMWs had just been released and there was a group of them in the Museum carpark that were undergoing journo testing.

It was a great rally.  Unfortunately, I won't make it there this year either.

Turns out the time I went was Rockers original, in 2013.  I cant believe it was so long ago, but I had a great time.  I capped it off by staying the extra day to go to Gateway.  What an amazing ride and museum.  I'm still telling people about it.

I rode my 900 Kaw thru Ouray in 77.I rode up  into a secluded spot on The outskirts of town and pitched my tent.Is it possible to do that today,I hate to make camping reservations?

You can do it in areas of the national forest which permit “dispersed camping.”  There are fewer and fewer of these areas every year.  They are marked on the forest service maps.

Otherwise, I think Ouray has an ordinance against Crapping In The Woods.

I am planning on attending the Ouray rally again this year. After selling my Stelvio last year and being forced to chase everyone around at the Utah Rally last fall on my poor little Yamaha XT250, I have recently acquired a lightly used 2022 V7 Special being sold by Kballowe. Recent knee surgeries made the V7 hard for Kevin to ride so he listed it for sale and I snatched it up. Huzzah, I'm back on a Guzzi.!

KOA isn't too far from the town for some that might want a hotel.  Maybe 5 miles.  And Ridgeway is about the same distance.

Yes, I made an uncharacteristic change in plans and stayed for that ride. I’m so glad I did, it was a great time. I had a red Stelvio back then

For anyone who is interested, I should have at least 2 campsites available.  If anyone would like to claim them, let me know.  Also, I think most of the campsites will accommodate 2 tents/bikes, so if anyone is willing to share their site they can double up and share the cost.
Just please post your intention here, i.e., “I am looking for a campsite to share” or whatever, and hopefully we can get everyone paired up with a site or a cabin.

Gary, so great to hear from you.  Michael D and I were visiting a few weeks ago and we talked about our fond memories of you as our riding pal.  Won't forget those wax lips on our ride to Mt Scott.

I'll have to check out the Hot Springs.  I've camped at Ridgway before.  I'd like to take the Hauler up there, $5 diesel makes is pretty expensive.  Certainly more affordable going double.

Sorry for the slow reply, but have been out camping.
The sites I have are tent sites and do not have hookups for water or electric.  But please feel free to make use of them, just let know if you do so they are not over-committed.
Looking forward to a fun weekend and great riding.

Bump, only two weeks away!  Some details.

Thursday, Sept 8 we arrive in Ouray.  We will gather for dinner at the Ouray Brewery at 607 Main Street at approx. 6 PM.  Please try to attend, as this will constitute our first opportunity to meet and get oriented for the upcoming rides.

Friday at 9:00 we will depart from the KOA campground and ride the Durango, Dolores, Telluride, Ridgeway loop.  Lunch will be in Durango at the Steamworks Brewery, 801 E. 2nd Ave.  At Telluride, there will be an unpaved option to take Last Dollar Road for the “off-road” crowd to contemplate.  Not sure who if anyone will want to do this, but if you are interested you might Google it to determine its condition.  It is a shortcut back to the Dallas Divide, a bit rough for a few miles, but quite scenic.
Friday night I have not made any dinner plans, but may see if I can come up with something…

Saturday we will ride to Gateway via Norwood and Naturita.  Much of the road has been repaved since we were here last and it should make for a great ride.  Lunch will be at the Paradox Grill at the Gateway Resort.  Those who wish can take a tour of the auto museum at the resort.
Saturday night we will meet in Ridgeway at the True Grit Cafe, 123 N Lena St. at 6:00 for dinner.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Alan

I live in Delta. If I don't make it to Ouray I will certainly try to make it to Gateway. If yall want to swing by after lunch, i'm 70 miles from Gateway then 59 miles from my house to Ouray. Would love to have a bunch of Guzzi's in my driveway..... You could even do a little wrenching if needed.

Alan

10 geese and a V-Strom at Red Mountain Pass. They migrated from as far as Tasmania.

Thank you Alan for putting this great time together!  If we couldn't be in Mandello this weekend, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else!

Once again I can't thank all of you enough for helping me through my little tire incident yesterday. We are all safe and sound, and the Stelvio is on the lift waiting for me to take a few minutes to put the new tire on.

I noticed when I got home from Ouray that my fairing was slightly tilted (likely due to my minor tip over) and I removed it to straighten the brackets. This is what I found when I removed it.

Glad you made it home safely.

Yeah, I did go through that construction zone Sunday. Bike was not handling abnormally strange, chalked it up to a worn rear tire. Made it home just fine but still scratching my head over how this happened in the first place.

Took me a bit to figure out what I was looking at.  Some motorcycles are designed with asymmetric forks, ie one spring or different damping.  This would probably play out a an intermediate preload setting, negative on one side and high on the other.

Thanks for hosting our Tasmanian boys.   Dale and John made it all the way to Cabo San Lucas and then turned back north.  Arrived here in Fremont, CA last night.  Relaxing a few days before they fly back home.  Great chaps.

Wow!.  I have been away for awhile so just seeing this.  I can't believe things could be that out of whack and cause serious handling issues.  have you been able to get it straightened out?

Still not sure how my forks got jacked like that. I had them off earlier this summer and must not have tightened them up properly. When I took my little "dirt nap" they got readjusted. Made it home safely but I will need to replace the seal.
As for the Tasmanians, they were a welcome addition to the crew. Good humor, good stories, and welcome help getting my bike upright again!
