Title: Entertainment when it's below zero
Post by: Rough Edge racing on February 21, 2015, 11:06:24 AM
I got nothing better to do than be at the top of a 24 foot ladder chipping ice off the roof in zero F temps with  some wind to make it even nastier. . It was an ice dam causing water to leak inside...No big deal, the house is all cedar inside and out...I managed to get a  heating  cable in place to prevent more water problems.
To be truthful I eat this stuff for breakfast...makes me feel young and useful...

That's what I spent most of yesterday doing, surgery with a splitting maul. And mostly on the roof, thanks to our crazy roof lines that ladders can't really get to.  Feeling young and useful until it suddenly flips to old and crazy!

Nothing to do here but be lazy.   A foot of snow still on the ground from Thursday, snow pelting down out there now, supposed to turn to ice tonight.

Jobs, in order of priority:

1) Keep the stove fed.   The wood I'm using now is some 40 to 50 year-old small pine that was in the back of a big woodshed of my in-laws who cooked on a wood stove until last year, then gave me their remaining wood, some of which was split for the cookstove by Granny in the 1960s.   It burns hot and clean but it burns fast, and you have to keep ahead of it.

2) Plan out my dry-wood campaign for when the snow is gone.   I only have a couple weeks wood left, and will need to cut and split some dry deadfall soon.

3) Keep the bird feeders full.   It hasn't gotten as high as 25 degF here for a week, day or night, and was down to -10 a couple nights ago, so we have to help the birds along a bit.    Right now, I have about 60 birds in the backyard, 12 different species, and all of them eating like ... well, not like birds, more like hungry wolves.

4) Keep the coffee pot full.   The second big pot of the day is brewing now.   Fay will drink some coffee on these cold days, and I keep her company just to be sociable like ....

And that's about it, as long as the snow's falling.   When it quits, I have a few things to do in the shop and with a snow shovel, but meanwhile it's me and Fay and Jack London and Patrick O'Brian all keeping company ....
