V7Sport out of dormancy
« on: May 05, 2020, 02:29:51 PM »
So, first post!
Had Vespas for many years (GS150, GS160, Rally 200, PX 200) but ten years ago I bought this V7 Sport and slowly my interest has shifted to Guzzi. Today all Vespas are sold and I currently have three Moto Guzzi; the 1972 V7 Sport, an 850T endurance-racer-look-a-like and a Le Mans III 998 cc Agostini.

I bought the Sport with a few mods as you can see in the picture. PHF 32`s, Stucchi exhaust and Marzocchi rear shocks. After some fiddling with jetting it ran quite well. However it has now been sitting for some time because of a leaking rear seal and I finally decided to restore the engine. The gearbox was restored a few years back by Rolf Halvorsen and the rest of the bike is in decent shape.

Got the engine out and disassembled. All exterior engine parts vapor blasted. The crank was worn quite bad and needed to go to 2nd undersize for the con rods but only first undersize on the front and rear bearings. New set of cylinders and pistons. Sent the flywheel to HMB in Germany for lightening. I have bought parts for closer to 10.000 € from them the last 6-7 years and have nothing but good experience!

While the engine was out I started to look at the frame and realized how bad the paint was. Some PO had first nickle-plated the lower frame rails and the swing arm and later painted it black but the paint is coming off of it. So finally I decided to do the frame also…

Today I delivered the frame, and other assorted parts, to the blaster. Expect it to be done in a week. To be continued...

Nice V7 Sport!  We all love a good V7 Sport story!  It sounds like you are on the right path all the way around!  I will be watching for your updates.

My first venture into Guzzidom was the V7 Sport.  I thought back then it would be the only Guzzi model I would ever desire to own.

My 73 when I got it.

And when I finished it.

Very elegant Sport, Dave!
That Burgundy red looks really good! Can’t decide between that and the green/lime. I also think tank decals looks a lot better than badges. The paint job will have to wait thou.

My big color choice was for the frame.  Since I was repainting the frame (and tins) I had the choice of silver.  During the time frame my Sport was produced there was silver framed bikes.

This bike belongs to a local Guzzi enthusiast.

In the end I went with the factory issued colors for my bike.

Received the Gilardonis from HMB some weeks back. Well packaged
The casting is very rough and the difference to the rest off the engine is way to big -I need to vapor blast them.

I've probably bought at least 20 sets of Gilardonis over the years and have never seen a set look that bad. Usually they're lighter in color than the heads even after the heads are cleaned and media blasted.

I like your V7 Sport a lot, especially the red.  It's closer than most to the color the previous owner of mine painted it back in 1979.  He had also painted the frame a similar red, but it didn't match the bodywork.  So in 98(?) I had some argent paint mixed to match an NOS Dellorto SS1 in my spares to use on my frame.  Not original but I like it a lot.

It's fun to hear about your Vespas.  Over the years, I've also had a 57 GS150, a 78 P200e and 2 older round Bajaj Chetak scooters plus others.  They're all gone, too.

I'll be watching your thread.

As most (all?) vendors seem to be out of V7 Sport cylinders at this time I can only guess that this pair has been sitting on the shelf because of the rouge cast... It is time for Gilardoni to maka a new batch.
Hopefully my pair will look better after vapor blasting!

The Vespa is truly a genius design from both a technical and esthetic point of view, and the GS 150 is the pinnacle of esthetics.

I have followed your Corsa thread with much interest. Deeply impressed!!
I actually built a "Vespa GS 150 Corsa" loosely based on the Sei Giorni. I'll see if I can find a picture...

I would consider yourself very lucky to have those Gliardonis.  There can't be many at all on sellers shelves anywhere in the world.  All of the usual suspects in the USA are out I believe.

Some progress yesterday.
Picked up the frame and assorted parts from the blaster. Cleaned it out and sent it of to paint.
Also installed cam, rank and conrods.

Tuesday again. My day of work and time for some quality time in the garage.

The engine is slowly coming together. Lubrication and ventilation systems, cam drive, sump and flywheel installed.
Still waiting for my new cylinders to be vapor blasted.
Got new stainless allen screws for the timing chest and valve covers. Also received the gasket kits from Eurocarb for the carburetors.

The frame came back from the painters. Didn’t go full gloss but 60% and it looks really good. I don’t know what its like in the rest of the world but in Sweden all paint shops I have previously dealt with have an alternative view of time -one week always turns into five or twelve or whatever. Really nice that this shop actually delivered after the promised week!

Engine bottom completed, I'm just waiting for the heads.
Got the cylinders vapor blasted and they turned out really nice. Buttoned up the engine chest, got the clutch in, flywheel etc.

As you can see I'm going for Sachse ignition (this is the fourth bike I'm installing Sachse), this time with the integrated rectifier.
https://www.elektronik-sachse.de/shopsystem-3/en/ignition-rectifier-regulator-combination-pureg.html
The set up with Sachse is super simple. Put the engine in TDC, adjust a disc at the alternator. Done! I've driven to Italy (from Sweden) twice without any problems whatsoever.

It has been a couple of weeks with less activity regarding the Sport. There has been some other Guzzi associated activities thou, the Le Mans III is going to be featured in an article in a bike mag. We had a cleaning day in the garage and I finally got my Guzzi sign up on the wall. Also, the sailboat needed some attention.

The cylinder heads came back a couple of weeks ago. Re-sleeved guides and a very moderate porting job, more like a blueprinting. Had to wait for shims to get the valve springs up to spec.
Today I got the heads back on and torqued up.

The sign!

Productive hours in the garage yesterday and today!
Got the swingarm, fork, rear and front wheel mounted. Foot and hand controls also. Since most of it was in good working order its basically just to reassemble everything.
Upgrading some of the hardware to stainless.
Electrics coming up... :

So, finally back in the garage after summer vacation. It has been quite nice despite the current state of affairs. Spent a couple of weeks in my summer home, sailing, fishing and most of all relaxing.
Since my last post I have hooked up and adjusted brakes. Got the exhaust mounted. The carburetors (PHF 32) renovated and mounted.
Also electrics… most of it is done, only a few loose ends. I got a Sachse ignition with integrated rectifier and regulator. Upgraded the stator to the 20 amp model.
A few more hours and I will be able to crank it for the first time in a couple of years.

And it is running again!!
Cranked it without plugs for 5 seconds to get oil pressure, installed plugs and it fired up on second revolution!
Trying to sort jetting out, right now K4 needle in second slot, idle jet 50, main jet 128. Still slight hesitation of idle.
The torque weakness below 4000 is very obvious, especially since I lately only have ridden my LM3 tuned by Agostini. However, the Sport is so much nicer to ride in town. The LM 3 is a beast.

A good while since last post! And here is the reason.
Took the bike out for a ride and put it back on the lift when I came back to the garage. The plan was to re-tourqe the heads the next day. Next morning a friend sent me this picture.

Realizing it was gearbox oil (the only major part that was previously restored) I just had to walk away from the bike for a while…

During the holidays I felt that inspiration came back so I got back to it. Crabbed the frame and got the gearbox out. Luckily it was not the input shaft seal but the clutch pushrod seal that leaked.
I replaced them with o-rings. Not much oil on the clutch so I left it in, just hoping I won’t have to regret that decision….
Got the gearbox and swing back on yesterday.
