There are some interesting stories circulating about Fagen and Becker recording sessions, with the hired help. They were beyond perfectionists.

 
Walter laid down bass tracks.. all the *exceptional* guitar stuff was done by guys like Larry Carlton, Skunk Baxter, etc.
Where Walter was really good was lyrics, IMHO.

He was playing lead in KC at the Starlight I know recording sessions are a horse of a different color. Larry Carlton oh man, I gotta dig through the CD's, it's been awhile, what a picker!
