NGC - Seeking info about capturing stills from video
« on: December 24, 2020, 11:19:07 AM »
In 2005, I made a trip from the Cleveland OH area out West to Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.  I did not take a point and shoot digital camera, but a dependable Sony HandiCam that recorded to Hi8 cassettes.  This particular camera recorded in an analog format, I believe.

I would (if possible) like to be able to capture some stills from the video tape, and convert them to JPEG files.  I've been able to do this in a somewhat crude fashion by stopping the tape (now on DVD) making a screen capture (Print Screen) pasting the screen capture onto a Power Point slide, which I then save as a JPEG file.

The result is somewhat usable, but fuzzy.

Is there a process that would permit me to capture images from the video, and make some fairly good still photos from them?

Thanks,

Bob

In general taking a still from video is pretty low resolution. The recording format of video frames is small so your not going to get large mega pixels from it. If you can play the video on a computer a screen grab of that will be about the best you can do, or export the frame to jpeg with some kind of video editing program might be a little better.
Of course today you can record 4K video that does have much higher resolution.

Thanks for the info.  I'll try your suggestion and see if I can find a video editing program that permits me to export a captured frame direct to JPEG format.

Merry Xmas!
