This followed me home
« on: April 11, 2020, 03:38:42 PM »
Was cresting  a hill 2 km from my place the other day and saw a guy staring forlornly at his bike on the side of the road.
He said it “ made a funny noise then stopped...!”
After gaining permission, I put the bike on the centrestand in 1st gear and was able to easily turn the rear wheel accompanied by a stripped spline type of sound.
I’m guessing it’s a stripped spline type of issue.
He said it was all a bit sad because he was “ putting it up for sale..” this weekend. I asked what it WOULD have been worth to him prior to the shred fest in the ‘box... He suggested $4,000.
So returning tho the Yaris, I broke out my trusty abacus and working on $ 800 for a new clutch and $700 for a gearbox and the $1,500 in labour at Southbank BMW in Melbourne, I offered him a grand on the spot and he thanked me “for my generosity” and took it.
I have done some research and I’m certain it’ll be because the splines don’t engage fully into the clutch body on the early ones and a combination of lack of lube, wear and 120,000 k rips the centre out.
The replacement clutches do not have the issue.
Given that I don’t charge myself $120 an hour, I may have it up and running for a further $1,500.
That’ll be $2,500 total which I’d be happy with.
It turns out he knew me, because I’d mentioned my Son had an ‘05 R1200 GS and as it happens they both ride together.
He said..”You must be that bloke on the red Norge..” (small world).
The engine runs beautifully and he told me point blank, that he changes the oil every 6,000 k and does not need to add any between intervals.
Near enough..!
Oh, what do I want it for..?
I don’t really, but there’s a plan afoot... :clock:

I'd pull the rear drive and check the splines, drive line and u-joint and go from there. 75,000 miles that motors got a lot of life left in it. Once its ambulatory I'd also give the cam chain tensioner and do a big maintenance which is all that big of a deal to do.

I'll also warn you they like company:

I’ll heed that warning P.
Also the lube thing is an absolute certainty.
My mate owns this..

And if he wants to put the time into the GS, I’ll get the parts and he can have it for Cape York.
He may as well keep it after that..
I have noticed that my Norge tends to be a bit soulless and I prefer the bland power delivery of the flat twin, to the loping liquidity of the V twin.
I think I’ll sell the Norge before it has too many k’s on it..
BMW’s have always had an undeniable charm and personality that is endearing.
The Norge has no “character...” I’m a bit nervous to go too far from home on it..

I’m not denying I’m married but I have strayed before and all it cost me was a house..!
Then there was that other time..
It only happened twice and it meant nothing..

Both times I ended out in the cold... :thewife: :embarrassed:

That might happen .
A budding young mechanic in Bungendore has offered to slide an 8V into the Norge.
There’s a 1200 Sport being offered in exchange for my Mk 2.
Hmmm..
2007, Red, Wire wheel, low k’s, 8V Norge....
Can’t be too many of them around.

Other than the fact that it looks like this guy should be doing his rounds on it, since they have something in common ...
