This thread was started under false pretenses and obviously is an oil thread. Kev M is hereby called out as an instigator for being one of the first to mention zoomy additives in oil- which we all know is the first shot across the bow.  I hereby banish him to posting solely in the physical ailments and steel cut oats threads for the rest of the day.

The OP disguised his thread under the obvious red suspender bait of saving money. His intentions are obvious. I say that he be roundly castigated by accusing him of riding- and worse, liking - a Harley in full pirate gear.

So I just called my local Moto Guzzi dealer in New Haven CT. and told the parts guy I am looking for 10/60 motor oil for my 09 Cal. Vintage and he replied, " why do you want 10/60? The bike doesn't call for that. I've been working on Moto Guzzis for years and don't use 10/60."  :wife:  :+=copcar

So he missed the tech bulletin that came out how long ago, almost ten years.

That wouldn't give me any confidence in that dealer.

Tony,

Give Jim Hamlin a call.  Not sure how far Bethel is from you, but he would be my recommended go-to dealer/mechanic.

Jim was the Guzzi/Triumph mechanic at Branchville Motors, and he opened his own shop last summer.   Nice guy, I remember him attending the Damn Yankee rally several years ago to hang out and BS with us.   I hear very good things about him, and he is a Guzzi dealer.

if you want to know how critical oil viscosity is to moto guzzi, you only need look at the hydro motors. they need oil thin enough to flow into the hydraulic lifters when cold, and use a thin oil as standard (10w40 I believe). the solid lifter motors specify 10w60. if 10w40 doesn't ruin the rods and crank and valves in a hydro motor, you think it will in a solid lifter motor?

5w40 in a Hydro motor.

So I ended up driving 20 miles to the nearest motorcycle shop that carried 10/60 synthetic oil, Maxima, and bought 4 quarts for $72.00. The price of an oil filter added to that. I laugh at the guys who say to their wives that they want to buy a motorcycle because they will save money on gas!! :D

My choice would be to not drive anywhere (much less 40 miles), and have 10 liters of 10W60 delivered to my house for $90.00, and continue to tell my wife that I'm saving with a motorcycle, especially since an oil change on her Subaru nicks us for $80 or so at the dealer's ......

I get the (20-50) Castrol Semi Synth for $29 a gallon at Cycle Gear.

Exceeds API SG, JASO MA2  or whatever.  It's on sale $25 now.  Dang, I just bought it Thursday.

An oil thread! Woo-hoo!
Just kidding. I bought 7 quarts of the Mobil 1 20/50 full synthetic yesterday for the same $9. Been using it for years in my Ducati and Norge.

Yeah.. I did find a place on amazon that would ship me a four gallon case of Maxima 10/60 synthetic for $145.00 which is approximately $9.00 a quart but it would not be shipped for 3 to 5 weeks which is too long for me to wait this time of year. I'll order it at a later date and have it on hand for the next oil change. This is the first oil change on the new to me Cal. Vintage. I use 20/50 on the EV which is much easier to get. On the other hand, I get my Subaru Forester's oil changed at the dealer for $38.00...of course that is not synthetic!!  ;)
