Title: It followed me home - 2021 V85TT Centenario E5
Post by: Luap McKeever on February 14, 2024, 07:18:07 AM
Found a deal I couldn't pass up. So, I'll forgo my Quota search now. This will fill that void and maybe then some. PO said he gave the side bags to the dealer. Dealer says he don't have them. That's kindof a bummer. I'd sure like those bags although I'd probably rarely use them.

Now to go through it, change fluids, etc. The fun begins soon...

Nice! Bummer about the side cases. Otherwise looks pretty well kitted out.

You will really enjoy this bike as it does everything so well.  It will put a smile on your face each time you ride it.  I have now had two and each of my two boys has one.  Congrats.

Really odd story about the bags.  Oh, well, they can be replaced with whatever you want.  I have always liked the various Hepco + Becker options on Guzzis.

Looks like some aggressive tires, there.  Are those Continental TKC80s?

I'm looking forward to hearing some ride reports.

You will love it.
A set of used or slightly damaged bags will show up soon. In the mean time the mounts are great. Consider small plastic generac bags or cheap leather like throw overs. In NE Ga. I run my v85 as yours is now. But in big wind areas the top bag really catches the wind.

Bummer about the bags.  If you come across some Travel bags with the mounts I will trade you.

Yes they are Continentals. I'm liking them a lot.

My V85 took a while to grow on my-it felt SO modern.  I've grown to appreciate it.  It's a fine machine.

Mostly fully serviced the bike today. All main fluids except final drive. Not in the mood to remove the tire just to do that. Had a little scare when removing the battery to check the air filter (previous owner installed a K&N for me). Put it all back together and it wouldn't run for more than a second or two and threw the warning "Alarm Can CMD Disc". So, took a chance and reset the user code and that fixed it. Weird.  The only thing I can find on it that don't work is switching to bright lights. Hoping it's a relay or something.

I put about 100 miles on it today and only about 15 of those were paved with some twisties. 8' u-turns are a hoot too. So far, I think I'm in love. The crazy thing gobbles up the roads up here like I hoped. I've taken it on loose sandy stuff, gravel, mud, clay and pavement. Good testiment to the versatility of these tires and no affect on the ABS which I've read could be an issue. I'll probably mount the same ones when these wear out.

Loving the cruise control and heated grips. First bike I've had with those heated grips. The tires, while aggressive actually work really well on the pavement and handled the corners surprisingly well. The real meat and potatoes is on the back roads. My gosh, what a good time that is. This bike will surely satisfy an itch I've had for a while when I want something other than the Indian or the EV to ride. I have many moods. Guess I just like motorcycles in general.

I'll put more miles on it in between work and the other bikes and chime back in for sure.

There is an funny switch on the front of the right grip that controls something with the lights.

There is a external drain for the rear end. Use 75/140 and just 160CC. But do change it. It could be overfilled.

Right, but you have to remove the tire to get to the filler plug from what I can see?

What looks like a level plug is what you use to fill it. A piece of rubber tubing on a bottle with a nozzle. Measure with a measuring cup 5.4 ounces then spray it in.

They're great handling on pavement, unfortunately (in my experience) they wear out pretty quickly and are expensive to replace.

The rear wheel on my '19 V85 got covered with oil from an over filled final drive.  The cure was to drop the level from 180-210cc down to 160cc.  When I got the Centenario two years later I drained it right away into a measuring cup...........185cc .  Someone didn't get the message.

The funny part was I was at the Top of the Rockies Rally in Colorado and I noticed "oil" splattered on my rear wheel.  It didn't look quite right as it was more a puddle than a radial pattern.  It turns out it was a can of bear spray I had strapped on the bike had exploded in the direct sun.   I took it right to the car wash!

I pulled a page out of filling up my outboard boat motor lower unit from the bottom up. Did this on the V85TT and it worked perfect. Don't know why I never tried this on the other Guzzi's before.

Little update. The previous owner called me today and is going to try and locate the key to the top case. He said he also has the stock windshield, exhaust, cat, skid plate and other bits that he'll try and send me soon. I did order a key from Mytech. The key was like $20, but the dang tariff from Italy was almost $200. Talk about robbery. I'm betting someone at that dealer sold the bags and the tuner. But whoever bought the bags....I have that key, so they probably can't get in them.

Here is another kicker, he said he indeed gave the side cases to the dealer (they said he never did) and inside them was the tuner from GTM. He said he had it tuned and it's 10-15HP more than stock and that's when the cruise stopped. I thought it felt a little punchy compared to the other TT I rode a couple times. I'm reluctant to have a dealer flash it again for the cruise as it would probably wipe out this tune that is so nice. So, I'll likely live with it as is to avoid that.

Congrats.  It's a great looking bike.

I'm keeping an eye open here in Australia for a good deal on a V85tt.  I'm hoping that the imminent Stelvio might see a few 85's traded in.

I bought my '21 85tt last Oct at what I felt was a very fair price.  Keep your eye out you will find one.

Thank you.  I think I found your blog online when first looking for info on the V85tt.  Nicely done, that's for sure.

Peter Stevens in Geelong had a 2020 Travel for sale a month or so back but i procrastinated, unsure if i wanted the next model with tubeless rims etc, and it sold in the meantime.  The other problem is that Peter Stevens aren't interested in running a demo of the V85 any more and I won't pay 20k for something I may or may not love, lol.  At management level, PS aren't doing Guzzi any favours at all imo.  The brand needs building by an enthusiastic distributor.  But I'm hoping that with new VVT version arriving they might put a demo on the fleet and at least then I can see if the ride position etc is suitable to my wants.

Many thanks and safe travels.

(apologies for derailing this thread!).

I buy things from Italy periodically and with shipping have gotten better prices than buying from a US vendor so I don't understand why there was a $200 tariff on the item you tried to buy.

Were you dealing with the general manager / owner of the shop where you bought the bike?  If not, I would personally make them aware of the fact that the bags were supposed to stay with the bike.  If nothing else, maybe it will keep someone else from going through the aggravation, but also let the GM / owner know that there should be transaction records and money in his pocket instead of an employee selling them out the back door.

Yeah, I've bought things from Agostini Mandello and other places in Europe and have never paid a tariff like that.

Oh I know and agree. I'll never buy from them again. And I'll make sure everyone knows about this. Their communication also stinks to high heaven. I'll actually be surprised if I even receive what I paid for.

The whole shop was looking for the bags. Everyone concluded the PO still had them. If I didn't get such a smoking deal on the bike, I'd have pursued that to the end of time. But, when 8 people all say the same thing, I have to take their word at it. There'd be no use talking to the GM about it. They lost money on the bike so I doubt they'd be much help either, other than saying "well, my people say they're not here"...

How do you like it compared to the Quota?

I've had a 2000 Quota, 2009 Stelvio, 2012 Stelvio. This V85 is better than all of them in my opinion. It's more fun, lighter, more nimble, handles off roading better, and the power seems to be more too. Probably the power to weight ratio.

I've had the Stelvio NTX, two V85s, and now the new Stelvio V100.  I don't really know if the V100 Stelvio will replace the V85.  The V85 is just such a sweet bike.  Although the V100 motor is more capable, it is also a heavier bike.  The V100 is more stable, but the V85 is more nimble.  Trade offs.  Anyway, congratulations on the new bike and you will love it!

I did.  I found a used E5 at Peter Stevens and they were willing to let me test ride it.

Last week, I bought it.

Yesterday, I brought it home.
