be far easier to use an alternator mounted ignition and system

Have a search for silent hectik or electronic Sachs

Silent hectik is my personal fav

The biggest problem would be locating the hole in the case for the distributor bore.  There's no reference surface on the case, so you would need to locate the hole by reference to the centerline of the cam.  That's doable, but would require some pretty sophisticated measuring tools.  I'd turn the job down if it came to my shop.  Wouldn't want to see the customer's face when he saw the bill.

maybe if you took a block that was already machined you could use that to make fixtures for machining . Just a thought, Ive never done it

I think it's all set, you only have to enlarge the hole in the block. I haven't done one either but a few here have.  My cover plate is leaking so I'll be looking in there and swap the oring soon coming up.

Have not done one myself, but I think in addition to the hole for the dizzy, the dizzy itself you will need a different cam. The FI  cams do not have the gear to drive the distributor

The part number for the '97-'00 EV cam (2905 3350) is the same as the Cal III, so there's a chance it might still have the gear on the cam.

If the hole isn't machined at all or incompletely, it really wouldn't be a huge deal to do it. A friend did his with a hole saw! The perfect fixture-in-the-making is an old distributor lower housing from an (original) Eldorado.

Bolt that to the block, with a couple of bushings in the bore, it would guide the shaft of a (self-made?) cutting tool perfectly straight.

On my 94 Cali, the engine has the hole in the case  and the oval cover. Have seen  a 95 Cali Carbie with the same hole  and cover as mine. My cam, when removed to install a B10, did not have the gear for the dizzy. I suspect that at least from 94 0n, the dizzy gear went away.

Are you sure about that? I'm not sure on the 95, but on a 98 and 2000 it looks machined, but it isn't completely finished. You may need to open it up for the dizzy shaft and gear, all the way to the cam, and then go deeper on the larger diameter where the dizzy body seats, if using a dual point distributor, that is.

Oh, yours is a 98. Don't know why I thought 95 ?

I was thinking that there was only the casting ridge where the hole would be (as on my '96 Sport 1100) and not an actual hole in the case where the distributor shaft goes.  If you've got a finished hole there, not a difficult job.  Having raced with point ignition systems though, I don't see the purpose.

I don't even know what a dizzy is (except for those of us stumbling toward the tents at certain Guzzi Rallies ), but what I've read on this thread suggests you might want to simply find a P8 computer and "go with the flow".
