Title: Where are all the Guzzis?
Post by: LongRanger on April 13, 2021, 01:32:55 PM
We all know how rare it is to see another Moto Guzzi in the U.S. but in my many visits to France, Germany, Austria, and the UK, these bikes seem to be just as elusive. Even in Italy, its home turf, I’ve only seen one. Just lots of BMW’s and Honda’s.

Where does MG have any market presence?

I *think* Germany, Netherlands, and Japan are the biggest markets...  But they only produce a few thousand bikes a year, so they will be scarce on the ground no matter what. I am always shocked to hear people report not seeing them around the boot tho. You would think there would be many circulating there.

Attend any Guzzi Rally in the USA, and you are bound to see at least a dozen (or more) Guzzi's!!

I have seen enough on the Blue Ridge Parkway on a single day to almost qualify as a rally! I saw 4 in one day once, plus the Breva I was riding at the time. (3 V7 series and a v85)

There are very very few Guzzis in Austria indeed.
But on the positive side: There are many Piaggio shops around, since Vespas sell like crazy.
And these often sell/service Guzzis too.

But Piaggio certainly needs to spend some bucks on marketing MG better.
Nowadays if you ask a young(ish) girl/guy about MG, you're lucky if they ever even heard of it.
That can't bode well...

They are still fairly rare.  If you go to a popular meeting point say 50-100 bikes you may see one or 2.

The market is so diverse now. Lots of european bikes,  Truimphs, KTM's, BMW's, ducati's are popular.  not unlikely to see a few Harleys or Enfields.  The Japanese are from having it their own way these days.  Small capacity bikes which are common, Korean and Chinese have a good share.

I’m currently living in New Jersey and I don’t ever recall seeing a Moto Guzzi in the wild. Not one. I only bought my V7 because I fell in love with it just seeing it in a craigslist ad. Plus, I’m a bit of a weirdo and just need to do things differently. Truth is, I’d estimate 90% of the bikes I see on the road are Harleys. I find myself looking with interest at ANYTHING other than a Harley. If Moto Guzzi production is really down to 6,000 or 7,000 units a year, I’m wondering how long they’ll keep this up. It’s too bad really.

Encountered a young fella from Italy who was taking his Nonna on the RT 66 tour , both looked at the Moto Guzzi logo on the Jackal and asked if it is Italian .

At one time there were at least 6 riders of the marque in Muskogee and the immediate locale , all part of my circle , two moved , one passed , one I have no idea about , the other still has one he rides , although we rarely see each other anymore . Haven't noticed any newer small blocks , although the dealer in Tulsa says there is a group of about 8 that gathers there on Saturday mornings , will need to check that out .

On a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest we only saw a total of three.

I see way more here in NZ; the unorganised 100 centenial "rally" that happened here in Hanmer had about 140 bikes show up.  Not bad for an unorganised event!

A handful of times per year I'll head up to one of the big local bike nights here in Dayton. Easily 500 bikes come and go over the course of the night. It draws from pretty far afield, with foreign plates somewhat common. Not my crowd, and I never see anyone I know. I just like to show the flag once in a while and it's a guilty pleasure of mine to sit up on the balcony and watch the puzzled looks on peoples' faces as they encounter the Guzzi.

You can tell when someone recognizes what it is because they all do the universal hand motions that indicate "sideways engine" as they talk with their companions

For years, mine has been the only Guzzi.

2 years ago, I saw one other - a newer V7. Cadre's influence for sure!  :thumb:

Im in NY, and really almost never see one.. Maybe a handful the last 10-15 years..  But cross over to western Mass [im in eastern NY near the mass boarder..] and I see them quite often. Used to be a dealer in Pittsfield mass so maybe that's why.. I spend time in the summer on in southeast mass also, and see quite a few. So there just seems to be pods of them in different parts of the states.

Due to Corona, I haven't been traveling since I moved to Germany.

But in my town of Bochum, I've seen a 1000 SP, a Mille GT, a V7 III, a Stelvio, and I reguarlary see a V85 parked along the street when I go grocery shopping.

In the US before I left, I had seen a few V7s outside of rallies / stopping by a dealership.

When I visited Germany before we really moved, I saw a Guzzi in almost every town I stopped in. Grisos, an 850 Lemans III.

My anecdotal observations.

Last summer I went to the Broken Arrow rally in Idaho. We stopped for gas in Salmon. We were riding a Lario, a V7ll and my Audace. Whilewe were filling another Guzzi pulled in,a Loop if I remember correctly. He walked over to us and said that he was doing the 4 corners tour. He had left in South Carolina, gone up to Maine and was on his way to Seattle. You guys are the first Guzzis I have seen. He was amazed to see three of them in one place until we explained that there was a Guzzi rally just up the road. He had everything on his bike except the kitchen sink.

In Oslo (pop. 700,000) there are 50 members of our national Guzzi club.
Many of them probably have several bikes. There are also probably several Guzzis not owned by members.

I'd guess at least 30 Guzzis within 10 km of me.

Wow! I saw 4 of them this afternoon when I went out to the shop!!

I saw 4 of them in my shop too. I’m betting at least 1/4 of the readers here have one or more in their shop. So it’s probably people like this that are hoarding them and that’s why they are so elusive in public.

For me, I have probably only seen 5 in the past 20 years on the roads in central NC.  But when I would go to the Moto America Open Houses I would see a bunch of course and that was a delight.

About 8 years ago (maybe more) I saw the two in this video rolling down a four lane near my home and I chased them but could not catch up...they were moving.  Always loved their video:

Just numbers for the USA.  I'm going to use sales of 700 units per year for this purpose.   The US supposedly is about 10% of Guzzi market, and I'm just picking an average yearly production of 7000, the real number could be a bit higher, might be lower.  So with that, in the last 40 years using those numbers Guzzi sold about 28,000 bikes!

28,000 bikes!    Of those 28,000, how many are on the road??  It's a wonder most folks would see more than 1 or 2 a year!

There are certainly years Guzzi sold much more than 700, but there are surly years when they sold less.  But even though we complain about the dearth of dealers, I have a feeling Guzzi is recently selling more each year than 700.  The nuvo v7 series, has sold better than just about any Guzzi since I don't know when.  And the V85 has been at least a triple if not a home run for Guzzi.

I live just outside of the IL twin cities of Bloomington/Normal with a metro area of maybe 150,000.  I know of three other Guzzi riders in the area, 5 if I stretch it out to 45 miles.  In the past 2 years I have seen at least 6 Guzzi's running about town.

Their annual output of bikes is very small (mid thousands) relative to other manufacturers.  Last time I looked it up, Harley did in a week what Guzzi does in a year, thereabouts.

I agree, I have spend a little time in Italy and the Guzzis are few, even in Mandello considering that's where the factory is.

I am in the northwest part of NJ and have only seen one other one on the road, out in Hawley PA. However, during Summer we have bike night at the Jumboland Diner, in Branchville, and there may be 3 at a time there. They have not seen mine yet, a 2020 V7III Special in silver. Most of my riding buddies ride Royal Enfields, and sometimes I do too..........we are all odd. The Lemmings all ride only Harleys.

where I live which is in Northern Kentucky just below Cincinnati, you have a decent chance of seeing a Guzzi or 2 on any local ride.  Our dealer is very active and seems to be putting quite a few bikes out in addition to keeping the old ones going.  i could myself lucky.

The answer is right here in the classified ads! Look at all the 20 year old bikes with 15--25000 on them. People buy and store all brands of bikes.
