Ambassador petcock seals
« on: April 16, 2021, 09:30:45 AM »
Good morning all,

Does anyone know of available rubber (viton or other) seals for the inside of the petcocks used on the loop frames?  Mine are disintegrating, they are the type without a reserve, so only two small holes very close together.  It seemed a few years ago someone on the forum was making and selling them, but I can't seem to find the post about it.

MG Cycle and Harpers have some kits, but not for this style.

Thanks in advance,

Rusty

Contact Bruce Giller <bcgiller@gmail.com> or John Chicoine <jchicoine@verizon.net> Both should have what you need.

John Chicoine, the guy who refurbishes the universal joint makes an excellent kit for the old sugar cube style.

I gave up on the reproduction sugar cubes, they just havent worked for me. I dont even have the bike on the road yet and they leaked every time I put gas in the tank. I switched to the later tonti-style ones that MG cycle sells. They have reserve and i *know* they work

True, with repro sugar cubes. But the originals, once rebuilt, work perfectly well.

Knocking very hard on wood...........I have a set of sugar cube repro's with reserve that are about 10 years old and still work fine. Maybe the recent ones are not as good?

I also have a set of the Tonti style ones that use an adapter. They work fine, but are a bit close to the carb tops.

After doing battle with changing the seals on a pair of sugar cubes. I don't think I would try again. Or is there a trick to getting the nut screwed back in while compressing the spring and not cross threading it???

Thanks, just the info I needed!  I have the original sugar cube style, I'd like to keep them just not the leaks...  Since I'm running the crossover "X", I just turn on one petcock. If I run it out (rarely ever), I just torn on the second and there is still fuel left in that side of the saddle. Same song and dance with my British bikes.

Helps if you remove the handle - it's threaded. Put cube in a vice, nut facing up. Push down on the nut while turning.

Didn't know the handle was threaded.

I've used Bruce Giller's rebuild kit and it worked great.  He has a great sense of humor as well.  That alone is worth the cost of admission.

So, are the repops not worth rebuilding?

I'm on my second set and this is getting old. turn on the fuel and it gushes out, both of them. Not even a year old.

The problems seems to be that there's nothing to keep the seal from rotating. If one can figure out a way to keep that from happening, then the repros would likely work fine.

I have the original sugar cubes, rebuilt with Bruce's Viton seal kit, and my eldorado has been leak free for over 12 years. He has a bunch of  grappa drinking "Knomes" in his basement making the gaskets...Thats what Bruce says!
