2001 California Special wiring harness
« on: May 16, 2015, 09:58:05 AM »
Thought I had the problem fixed last month, then it started acting up again.  This time, I pull the tank off only to find a gobbled mess of melted wires.  Evidently, the gas tank leak that I had a few years back must have softened the wires and then they got together and started a real mess.  I've tried locating one with no luck.  Some are close, but no cigar.

Wondering if anyone knows where one can be had.  Maybe a wiring genius here that could even rebuild it?  I suck at wiring.  SUCK at wiring :-).

I basically need it from the 4 connectors at the steering head clean back to the fusebox.

Ouch! I had to replace the harness on my Jackal last spring due to a self-induce melt down.

It'll likely be hard to find an exact match. With time and patience, you can adapt one from another model manufactured within a year or two of yours.

You might want to check with Greg Bender. He might be able to reconstruct yours or build you a new one.

Give Greg Bender a call. If he doesn't have a harness made up he might ask you to sent him yours so he can fashion the new harness correctly.

As near as I can tell from the harnesses I've disassembled the wires are all in the harness for any of the 15M-based BB's of the day.  Some of them put the wires in different connector holes, which makes a drop-in iffy -- you have to pin-out the wires and sometimes shift them in the connectors to be sure they're where you need them for your bike.  If yours are melted in a big lump, tracing wires with a meter isn't going to tell you much.  Unfortunately, harnesses and paper diagrams don't always match either -- simply following the map can have bad results.

So the best way to replace your main harness is to have the replacement, the old harness and the bike in the same place.  That doesn't sound like it will happen.  The next alternative would be to send your melted center section along with the proposed replacement to someone who can make really good guesses about the pinouts, a sense of humor about wire, and either the lack of ability to feel pain, or a whole lot of patience, and have them make the necessary (anticipated) pin relocations.

That someone would be me.  PM with a ph# and we can chat about where to go from here.

Found the problem. It was of course at the very end of the wrapping in the harness. I'm lucky that only 8 wires needed replaced. I have wires rebuilt and everything appears good now. What a mess it was. I've been on this for 10 hours straight.
