Griso - lacquer lifting on tank

Is it lacquer? Or is there some kind of vinyl wrap? I thought the tank was painted with 2pac or something.But I have some bubbling, where a very flexible transparent layer is lifting off. It's small - but getting worse. 

So - what is it? And how do I make it stop?

The usual cause for tank issues is ethanol in fuel.

I assume the clear coat paint is peeling off the outside.  If so, possibly the tank had been repainted previously.  The only cure is to remove all of the current clear coat, probably by sanding and repaint basecoat and clear coat.  A two part urethane would be my recommendation.

OK. I didn't think ethanol in fuel was a huge issue in the UK.

But anyway. Can I fix it? Or stop it spreading? And what is it? Is the tank vinyl wrapped, or is that some kind of lacquer lifting?

It hasn't been repainted. I've had the bike from new.

This is a well known issue with Ducati as well. The alcohol makes the tank swell and in some cases bubble. My Norge tank touches the handlebar ever so slightly for that same reason.

Which Griso do you have? The single-color early models look like paint to me. But I think the most recent two-tone tanks are decals overlaid on paint. (Am I wrong?) Is it the red or silver (decal) area, or the base coat that is giving you the problem?

It does not have to be a repaint for the clear to flake off.  Just a little more common.  The fix is the same......

Only just seen this Waltr. Sorry to be six months late replying.

the bike is an early 8v - 2008, and black. The peeling is on the r/h side of the tank, just above the frame rail - it's a patch of about 2 or 3 square inches. The material peeling off is clear, and looks like a lacquer or a thin plastic wrap. It's more bubbling than peeling.

There is ethanol in most UK petrol these days. All unleaded has at least 5% and some super unleaded
does too, definitely supermarket fuels and even Shell.
Texaco and Esso Super do not generally have an ethanol content.
The only way to get a definitive answer as to whether the fuel you use has ethanol, is to carry out
the simple check with some fuel out of your tank.

 Inferior paint or there's a leak in the tank and fuel is seeping under the paint..... I sometimes spill fuel on my Jeeps and Chevy truck when fueling and while it may stain, it doesn't lift the finish..And these vehicles are are 14 years old...
