Griso reaction rod rust
« on: March 18, 2017, 05:43:39 PM »
Well, I've just given the old girl a bit of a spring clean. And I am disappointed to see that the paint is lifting off patches of rust on the reaction rod. Again.

Last year I treated the rust patches with a commercial de-ruster and touched up with Hammerite smooth. While it looked OK, it clearly wasn't good enough, as it's lifting and rusting again, after being used right through a London winter.

So what's the best way to treat this? Does it need to be blasted and stoved? Or what? Bearing in mind that my boy is working up to going racing again - and I am therefore as poor as a church mouse.

I have no idea what the reaction rod does, but to me this sounds like the rod is deflecting more than your paint can handle.
Once the paint cracks your beautiful English weather does the rest.
My fix would be remove it, bead blast it and have it powder coated.
Not that expensive, perhaps your son can do a week on baked beans to help pay for it :-)

Cheers

A week on beans could impact on his power to weight ratio for racing, too! :whip2:

Is my idiom a little obscure for you New World and antipodean types? "poor as a church mouse" means I am challenged in the Wonga zone.

Which also leads me to wonder what to do about my oil cooler surround casting, which is also corroding and rejecting its paint. Nearly THREE HUNDRED nicker for a new one. Crikey.

Well just in case anyone's still listening...

I resorted to the old faithful rust treatment and Hammerite this afternoon. The match isn't perfect, but it'll keep the water out, and looks a lot better than flake n rust. Anyway, this Griso is a working bike, not a show bike.

Plan A now is to get a quote for bead blast n powder coat for the reaction rod and the oil cooler casing and get them done later in the year. In fact, I e-mailed a joint down the road in the People's Republic of Lambeth, and should hear back from them soon.

Evening Trog.
I was listening and wondered if the references to wonga, nicker and hammerite caused our Guzzi brothers sisters from afar any consternation
Don't worry, at least one person on the planet knows what you're on about
Good luck with the hammerite :thumb:

It's not that nobody's listening it's just that, well, what can we do? None of us can fix it for free so the choices are..

1.) Do nothing and let it go really scabby? (Very cheap, cost 0.)

2.) Take it off, get it blasted and powder coated, put it back on? (Cost? Well, indirect cost of time, bike off road, taking parts to be blasted then taking them somewhere else to be coated, inconvenience etc. will push up the cost beyond the direct outlay. Direct cost for blasting and coating? not very many.

3.) Purchase a second hand rod. (Boring finding one but then, when it arrives just swap it out. Cost? But it too will corrode.)

4.) Buy the pretty one. (It's probably less prone to corrosion if looked after, it's easy to find and order and will be with you quickly and the bike won't be off the road for any time. Cost whatever the price converts to.)

The ball is in your court.

Yeah...just a bit of innocent bait really. Though I may not have realised that Hammerite is possibly not a global brand of bodger's paint.
