What would be a low weight sidecar for a DR650?

I put a Velorex 562 on a DR650 for a customer and it worked well. Build a subframe for it, and beefed up the upper rear mount point also. Was a nice rig.

Agree with Lee on the Velorex.

I have not installed one on a DR650 but have done a few on KLR650's.

Heavier springs and a fork brace up front help also.

My DR650 served me for 9 years with a Ural sidecar attached.  Off road and on.
Top speed with hack was over 75 if I wanted it.  Milage while on the road was about 40.
My rear sprocket was about 48 teeth sometimes 50 later when I got to Hawaii.
Hawaii has lower speed limits. Hope this helps.

If/when you do it could you post some pic's as I have a DR650 as well.
That KLR looks good.
Never even entered my mind  to attach a s/car.
Then if it did it would more than likely get lost in there.

Do you have pics or sketches of the subframe or the wanton desire to reproduce one for a fee?

Could you post a pic or 2 of the mounts?

Noted on the springs and fork brace.

This will take several trips to bike pics to retrieve the photos.
First photo shows the subframe, a loop of steel pipe fastened to the frame on both sides front and back.
It also shows the 3/4 inch heim joint connecting the sidecar frame at the front lower.
BTW, the rear of the sub frame loop is also fastened on both sides and has a short vertical strap shown.
sorry, I do not have pictures of the upper rear mount, and no longer own the bike.

The second shows the rear lower heim joint connecting to the rear of the sub frame.

The next shows the front upper heim joint to the down tube of the bike frame.

This is how I adapted the VW steering damper.  I consider this to be a life saving item.

This shows the flex linkage between the bike rear brake and the sidecar brake.  If I step on the lever colse to the bike I get rear brake and a little sidecar brake action.  If I step on the home made pedal away from the bike , I get a lot less rear brake and a lot more sidecar brake.  This choice of braking actions greatly enhances off road handling and safety on road.

Kevin,

How much ground clearance did you end up with using the KLR? Did you make the subframe and attach it to the stock Velorex mounting "arms"? I have a 562 on my 1000SP, but have been thinking about picking up a KLR and going the dual sport route.

Thanks,

Tom

I am not sure what the clearance was but it was a decent amount for a sidecar rig. I don't have the rig here, it was a customers bike so I can't measure. I did not make the subframe on this one. It came from DMC Sidecar.

For the original poster - DMC also makes subframes for the DR650.
