Title: Craigslist scam? Moto Guzzi 1975 850T
Post by: randy yocum on December 10, 2018, 07:20:32 AM
Craigslist scam? I saw this ad yesterday, seemed to good to be true. But I pursued it anyway, hoping it was legit. But after a while my gut told me its a scam, the main thing was why sell through Craigslist and handle the transaction through ebay and not list the bike on Ebay auction site to start with, where she would no doubt get allot more money for this bike? Then she sent me more pictures of the T3 and you can clearly see the European licence plates on the car in the back ground. Then zoom in on the instrument cluster and the speedo reads in Kilometers.I'm sure this bike is not even in the USA let alone Arkansas or Louisiana .
What do you think?

to me

Hello,

Happy to see you are interested in my 1975 Moto Guzzi 850T3 Sport Special. I'm selling this bike for $1,500 because my husband died 3 months ago and it brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it asap. With a price like that, you might expect it to have some problems, but it's in excellent condition, meticulously maintained - both mechanically and electrically, no damage or hidden defects. Me and my son decided to sell the house and along with the bike we moved to my parents in Fort Polk, LA trying to start a new life.

I want to use eBay Motors services (5 days of testing prior purchase) for the safety of both of us so if you’re interested in purchasing, please provide me your full name for the bill of sale, delivery address and a phone number so I can notify eBay that you're selected as my possible buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure. I look forward to hear from you. Below you can find some specs and all the pics i have.

Color : Green Metallic
Mileage : 20,000
VIN : VD22139
Clear title, without liens or loans.

This fantastic Sport Special is a tribute to the mythic V7 Sport (red frame) virtually impossible to find and quoted in the field. It has been totally reconditioned and carries the triple disc brakes upgrade: Engine, clutch and transmission opened and totally serviced. Frame sandblasted and powder coated in Guzzi Sport red. Totally dismantled wheels, polished rims, spokes, nipples then replaced and balanced. Front forks polished and serviced with new seals and new inner shock absorbers. New front fender, fairing, fuel tank, tail, with modified ss rr fender and custom tail light. New seat with removable back to access the glove box, inside the tail.

Hello.thanks for the info I will answer your questions in the morning .can you tell me where the bike is .

Yes, I am interested in the bike ,but I will plan on driving to your location to pick the bike up, I live in Missouri .I don't want it shipped I will trailer it .That's why I need to know your  location or the location of the bike .If we are using Ebay to handle the transaction ,why don't you list the bike on Ebay (which I use all the time ) and I can make the purchase through them? Thanks Randy

Hi again,

Thank you for your interest. I will do my best to walk you through the process. Right now, I'm not home because I'm a special needs nurse - currently working with some wonderful children and can’t take off but I can arrange delivery to your address. I prefer to use uShip for delivery because they have a lot of positive feedback and they can have it at your home address in 2-3 days.

The deal is handled by eBay so I don't have much to do about it. In addition, you get 5 days testing period after delivery before buying it, and if you don't like it, you can send it back on my expense. Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive it and make sure everything is as agreed. We are both covered.

If you are ready to move on and want to learn more about how it actually works, please email me your name, shipping address and I will start the process with eBay. Thank you

Sure sounds like a scam to me.

One trick is to offer to have a friend come look at it. Funny how things get complicated after that, or they say it just sold.

Oh, yes, classic SCAM. I went thru the same thing, with almost the exact verbage, with a Toyota Landcruiser a few years ago. Must be a canned tutorial from an underground scammer's how-to book.

I saved the pics, though; whoever owned what I was looking at was a lucky dude.

When they never seem to be at home (offshore oil rig worker, overseas military, nurse on a heavy schedule, etc) it's generally a scam.

Big time scamola! If the idiots that run these scams would actually put a more realistic price on the bikes maybe they would get more "bites".

Yes, a scam. She seems way too knowledgeable about the bike and bikes in general to be who she says she is.

I can't figure out how they profit from this scam,if as they say the transaction is handled through Ebay, and I don't pay for the bike till after the 5 day trial period.Maybe the scam is I send X amount of dollars for the transport of the bike to me? and of course  the bike never shows up. :violent1:

Ebay does not handle payments for Craigslist purchases or any other than Ebay purchases for that matter. PayPal,yes...but not Ebay. A very old scam.

Exactly! The eBay 'connection' is the big red flag of craigslist scams. Who falls for these ads?

Look at the car in the background, it's got a European style license plate on it. They don't have those in Ft Smith,
