Honestly I don't think there is any right or wrong here BC.The brush bouncing idea is plausible but I can't see it being that much of a problem .I changed mine after reading the tip in Guzziology simply because I utterly respect Dave Richardson's advice.
The biggest improvement to thee systems is likely to be a solid state and adjustable  voltage regulator. The original mechanical ones work but fine tuning them to get optimal voltage is virtually impossible.

That is exactly what I am doing to mine. I am not even going to fool with the original equipment, new fuse block as well. None of it was very expensive.
