How have you made your Norge a more comfortable tourer?
« on: January 11, 2016, 09:21:48 PM »
The Norge starts its life as an excellent bike. But based on your personal preferences, what modifications have you made to better suit you?  Different windscreen? Gel seat? Lowered pegs? Raised bars? Additional lights? Electronic cruise control?

Please include the year of your Norge if you think it's relevant to the mods you chose.

Thanks.

Hi All, mine January 2011, 8v Norge.   Stock but added Calsci med screen, lot quieter, less buffeting. Not much higher than stock but wider on top wings. Stelvio handguards, they fit easily, hands a bit drier in wet weather, warmer in winter. Fitted Stebel horns ,under the fairing, left and right . AMP headlight covers too. Only fit bags when a long trip is planned.

2014. MG top case for convenient storage and a nice backrest for my wife, Agostini touring windscreen for perfect wind and weather protection with no buffeting, Knight Design lowering foot pegs and toe pegs for noticeably more leg room, and a throttle lock for cruise control.

2006 Norge

Corbin leather seat
Stelvio rear shock - more ground clearance, longer travel
Stelvio mirrors - clearer than stock
Windscreen 4" wider and 4" higher
10% higher gearing - use Breva 1100 primary gearset
Lambswool handlebar muffs - for winter riding
Hepco racks and topbox - side cases only when touring
Steel timing gears for low maintenance (and the sound)

Almost forgot :
MPH Startus Interruptus fix - still running on original battery

Corbin seat - massive improvement in comfort
GoldWing 1800 footpegs - lower, flatter, wider, more knee room by about 3/4 inch, slightly shaved off part of the kickstand footrest so it doesn't touch the lowered pegs
Cal Sci Tinted Shorty - better looking, much better on turbulence than stock, had bought a CalSci medium, but have never used it as the Shorty does the trick
Tom Tom Rider GPS - hard wired in mounted on a RAM mount
Escort Battery Powered Radar Detector - also on a RAM mount
Tank Bag - from Harpers, Tank cover as well from Top Sellerie
Louder horn
Throttlemeister heavy for cruise control
Crampbuster - for when not using cruise control
Halogen Driving lights - fork mounted (can't remember the name of the brand - bright enough to make the deer not cross the road  :) )
Smoked rear lenses
Scala Rider Headset Intercom - communicates with Bluetooth music and TomTom rider
All else stock...might consider changing out the rear spring when it wears out to something stiffer, but not bad so far even riding two up.

Next up...a King of Fleece seat cover for rainy days...
Got a pair of Helibars I ordered a few months ago...have yet to install them...maybe for the next super long distance ride...

Cal-Sci medium shield and a GPS mount, that's all. The seat seems fine for me although a bit over 400 miles has been my longest day so far but felt I could have comfortably gone another 150 or so. Sitting/handlebar position in general is just about perfect for me. Very similar to my T-3.

2012

1. MG cycle windscreen - re-curved like original but a little larger, can cruise at 80 with visor flipped up
2. Cee Bailey custom seat - found on ebay, got lucky and seems like it was made just for me
3. Goldwing GL1800 pegs - wider and lower than stock
4. Givi "Tanklock" bag - tanklock ring from Turkey, a nice person over there makes them for breva/norges
5. Throttlemiester throttle lock
6. Did Norge Pilot's "riser" modification to the handle bars, raised 3/4 inch

Now, just need some warmer riding weather !!

2008 Norge - things that may be less relevant to later design are marked with a *

- Helibar risers *
- Hyperpro spring and shock (rear) and Hyperpro fork springs
- CalSci windshield and Laminar Lip for stock windshield *
- Stelvio handguards
- Audiovox CCS-100 cruise control
- Throttlemeister (heavy) throttle lock / end weights
- Russell Day-Long saddle (with heat)
- MG trunk (2nd gen design)
- Additional LED lighting: 12" strips for running/signal/brake (red/amber/red) on back of each pannier, 12" amber for signal on each handguard
- Fender extensions on both front and rear
- Various engine mods help touring ( * may not be as valuable on later engine design)
- Sena SMH10 in all helmets
- Eastern Beaver circuit block with 6 switched circuits and 2 always hot circuits; all added electrical needs are fed from this block, and controlled by relays as required
- 12v accessory outlets on left dash (1) and in trunk (3 outlets) including USB converters and self-retracting cords
- RAM mounts on clutch reservoir (GPS) and brake reservoir (SPOT satellite tracker)
- IBA Premier plate frame

I've probably forgotten a few things, and I didn't include stuff that didn't have any effect on touring use but that are a good idea (i.e. starter fix).

Corbin saddle.  Bought one slightly used from 1200 Sport owner who had sold his bike, but kept saddle.  Installed on my 1200 Sport.  All day ride.  Sharpie script on saddle pan said 'Norge.'

7/8" or 1" handlebar size?

It's adjustable, got it on my Breva 1100 and take it off and put it on the EV. Fits on the grips not the bars.

Lots of people have installed the Medium Cali Science windscreen. I did. huge improvement over stock.
I have a Givi Trunk. Good for extra storage. I keep it on the bike all the time. Good for backrest for my passenger.
I installed some Stelvio Handguards.
I also had to raise the handlebars up about 1.5" to make the handguards work.
I also intalled a different dipstick that is external along the cylinder. (the original plastic one broke) It is easier to check oil, although harder to add oil.

I chopped the windscreen way down, it measures just under 15 inches top to bottom now.  Knight Design lowered foot pegs are nice, but you'll likely have to do something about the pad of the side stand contacting the foot peg.  I put a spot of weld on the side stand stop and filed it down until there was about and 1/8 inch of clearance between side stand pad and foot peg.  I tried a Russell-Daylong and it positioned me to high on the bike.  I like the Corbin seat, it offers a little more room to move around.  It also works really well with an AirHawk seat pad, for me anyway.
